I spent last week visiting Nashville and loved it. I did a tour of the local burbs...Forest Hills, Brentwood, Belle Meade etc., and came a across a splattering of MCM homes or 60's mod homes. There was one home in particular on Granny White pkwy. that I absolutely loved. I should have snapped a pic. OK getting to the point of your post....

While driving south on interstate 440 I couldn't help but notice the ultra modern loft like structures up to my right. I thought "great building, crappy location!" I would think the noise from the freeway (they basically sit on top of it) would be problematic, unless some serious sound proofing was included in the $999,999 "pre-construction" price.

I am all for urban infill projects, especially when modern design is incorporated, but this project seems ill-conceived as far as location.

What are your thoughts?

Hey there,

I actually agree regarding location. It's a bit odd. But, there is a history behind this development. I don't know all the details and can't confirm total accuracy, but the story basically goes...

Several years ago, there was an individual planning to build 2 modern homes at this location. My wife actually knew some friends of his way back then, and told me this story. Anyway, he'd picked the location for the great view and, more importantly, for the low cost. Unfortunately, he ran out of money before finishing even one. Then, it was burned down (insurance?). After that, the lot sat with the mess on it for a long while. Then, over the past year or 2, the original home (the burned one) was brought back to life and finished. After that, began the building of another, then another. I figured, after seeing the first home built, someone must have bought up all the lots to develop. As it turns out, my very close friend (we go back 20 years) is a realtor and the listing agent on this newest one (and on another one that previously sold). He probably knows more facts about the history than me.

No doubt, you have to drive down some not so nice roads to get to these homes. I suppose the hope is that will change as more new construction comes in? I hope so, as what they're building is amazing. Especially this latest one. It'd be a shame for it not succeed.

Personally, I'm not a downtown guy. I like at least a little bit a space around me (I live on an acre now). I probably wouldn't purchase such a place unless I were wealthy and could afford both an in-town and outside-of-town home. Oh, if only.. :)

PS: There are MCMs to be found in Nashville if you look around some. Check out my nashvillemodern website gallery. I've got more to add, but I'm way behind on updating the website. Will do that soon.

Please don't take offense, but I really don't like the house. The left side looks like a house turned upside down, and it's monstrous.

It appears that the concepts of modest and modern have been supersized.

This house seems to be a contradiction.....5000 sqft? ...3 car garage? I guess the market for "modern" is changing.

Reviving the thread...

I was recently contacted by the architect who designed this structure - called the "chevron house" for obvious reasons (there was also a second structure designed for a similar or same lot - images are on his website below). Turns out the architect is a relative newcomer to Nashville, formerly of Alberquerque and Chicago. His name is Ryan Thewes and he's worked for two Wright Fellows, Robert Green and Don Erickson. In Albuquerque he worked for Bart Prince (also an "Organic Architect and Bruce Goff apprentice) and Ryan also practices many of the techniques and philosophies of Organic Architecture. I've started a correspondence with him and hope to meet him on my next visit through Tennessee. Here's a link to his website: http://www.ryanthewes.com/index.html

I thought he might be worth a consult if you're in the south looking for something along the Taliesin or Organic style.

Here's a slightly different angle of the Havens residence. I think the similarity is striking.

Ryan certainly has the right pedigree. Anyone who takes chances like Bruce Goff or Bart Prince is OK in my book.
