Hello ladyIJsberg & welcome

These buildings were produced out of new theories emerging out at the end of the 60s, beginning 70s. They also followed a movement which heavily criticized the "moderns". Piet Blom was experimenting to find new avenues in this search & I must say that Netherlands is one of the best place in the world to do so.
I visited both of his tree houses projects, yours & the initial one he made in the beginning of the 70s, which I think is situated here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=51.480701,5.655298&t=k
Image
If my memory serves me right, I think there is a small isolated group of tree houses around there also.

So even though the dwelling you live in was built in the 80s, it is directly issued from Bloms experimentation in the early 70s. So my answer to your question would be: "no", but these dwellings are certainly some of the most interesting I've been given to see.

They rank alongside projects like the ones from Kurokawa & Safdie, and are direct followups to the visions elaborated by Archigram, Superstudio, B. Fuller & such.

But you probably know all of this.

Thanks for sharing

Madison Cube Garden :D, great!, I will show that to my neighbours!
The cube houses are little indeed, but so are most houses here compared to american standards. The intent of the architect was to create a community, and that he did. Almost all neighbours know eachother and they are all friendly easy-going people. When you are not like that you will not buy a house like this.

:o OMG! the one that's being cleaned by alpinists that's mine... I made that pic myself, amazing that you found that! ***

The picture upstairs is an old one with the red roof that was leaking. Now we have the black roof with the white top.

Our house is one of the few that is very much in it's original state. There are about 35 here in Rotterdam. Also the house that is open as a museum has a lot of the original design removed and changed.

, this is not mine, it is too dark in here now to make a picture, but it gives an impression. In my house all red things are white and the staircase is hardwood not painted black. Where the balloon is I have a window.

Thanks MD. Those are some great photos. They don't look that small in photos, seems to be plenty of space. I like how the Desk adn what appears to be the Kitchen is incorporated maximize space

What a great place to live. I really like my house, but I am still a little bit jealous.

Postby modfan » Wed Jul 11, 2007 12:29 pm

The ones with the larger roofs in the aerial pic-are they larger homes or a community common room like a club house or a meeting room?

We are living here with 3 kids, and then it gets crowded :), but the kids love it here. These houses are not expensive, people seem to be scared of them. If we can afford it we want to keep it so (one of) our children can live in it when they are older.
My plan is to enhance the house with very futuristic furniture(bubble chair like things) and then rent it out. I will post some pics when I can!!

The supercubes used to be a school and a place to play lasergame. Now the school is being renovated to become a youth-hostel and the lasercube will be some kind of housing project for students.

It is interesting to know that Blom made a similar project to the tree houses at the end of the sixties, using the same system of grouped dwellings on giant stilts.

So the cubes are rather "conventional" in their origin. I think that Blom was rather working on how to group (concentrate) conventional individual dwellings into new urban forms...

These cool homes remind me of the also very cool Pearlroth House of Westhampton Beach, New York, designed by Andrew Geller in 1959:

I think it has solar panels on the top squares.

Try the following link for a gazillion pictures of Blom's cubes in Rotterdam: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=cube+house

Might be just an impression, but the original Star Wars designers must have had visited Blom's first Cube Houses... :)

Well, something very strange happened. You will not believe this.
Friday 13 (!!!) we got a invitation-letter from our city-government to an information evening. One of the two big cubes will be used for a resocialisation project for 20 prisoners. The last year of their imprisonment they will stay there. They are not going to tell us what crime these guys did commit, could be murder, rape... We, the neighbours, are going totally crazy here. We are so close togheter. No way we can avoid these guys, even if we want to.
Of course our little community got together and try to stop this madness.
We also have a website and we are busy picking the best lawyer we can get. We also have a website www.overblaak.nl, but it's ony in Dutch
We now discover how special our community is. Blom's ideas really work. It really feels like we are a clan trying to keep the enemy out.

I first saw those on a business trip to Rotterdam in 2001...my Dutch colleague was surprised I found them interesting. At the time there was a "demonstration" unit open, that could be toured. I remember they looked a bit dusty and dated but still fantastically experimental. Definitely late socialist-modern but as a googie/mcm fan I found these interesting. Thanks for posting! Sorry to hear about the scary relocation plan. Good luck!!
