Yep. Pretty much a pop culture icon of my life. He was there for every phase of TV, from Magilla to Brady to Bunker. From childhood to adulthood.

He was also on several episodes of The Andy Griffith Show where he uncharacteristically played a bully.

I actually had a hard time with him as Barney on All in the Family because he was bigoted like Archie and how could nice ole Sam the Butcher be a bigot?

Yes, in 1 episode he played a new employee at the market just doors down from the Sheriff's and had him harrassing poor Barney. Another episode had him playing the boyfriend of a woman who had just moved into town who meek Howard was trying to woo and he was imtimidating him.

I had forgotten about his role in All In the Family. Did his character appear in the bar that Archie used to frequent?
