Negroni:

equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth... splash of orange bitters, and an orange wheel. Served shaken in a martini glass- some like it with sugar on the rim.

Hurray! I'm the second post on this forum (first if you don't count the hostess)

REALLY Dirty Martini

2 parts monopolova vodka (real potato vodka)
1 part dry vermouth
close to a 1/2 oz of olive brine (not just a tablespoon - cause you gotta really taste it)
3 olives - 2 for me and 1 to share

cheers!

My favorite cocktail isn't very modern:

Mai Tai!

If a place doesn't do a good Mai Tai, why would you want to drink their other drinks? If a place does do a Mai Tai well, why would you want to drink their other drinks?

As for "modern" drinks: Vodka Martini, very dry, rocks, 2 olives.

pink pearl

My favorite is the Pink Pearl:

Whisper the words "Rose's Lime Juice" into a martini glass full of Belvedere vodka that has been shaken with ice. Add a few drops of grenadine and let them sink to the bottom. There you have it!

Classic Manhattan

Postby Satan's Sin » Sun Jul 04, 2004 3:10 pm

Once I finally master the Cosmo -- it's actually a tricky drink to get exactly right -- I have since moved on to the mysteries of the Manhattan. Here's what considerable expirimentation has taught me so far --

DON'T use a cocktail shaker! Makes the drink too foamy!

Take old fashioned glass. Chill. Drop in cherry. Drop in cracked (not crushed ice) ice to 3/4 point.

Fill with good whiskey to almost the rim. Jack Daniel's is good, but then so a is cheapie wiskey called Ten High.

Pour in a half capful of sweet vermouth.

Two drops of bitters.

Gently stir.

It's potent. And yummy.

When it comes to Cosmopolitans, I use a really good recipe I saw on the Food Network, of all places:

1 Cup of Gin (Bombay Saphire, of course)
1/2 Cup of Triple Sec
1/2 Cup of Cranberry Juice
1/4 Cup of Lime Juice

Pour in Shaker, Shake, Pour

I like mine a little more limey, but it's always up to you :-)

Spudgirl --

These quantities in your cosmo recipe, this is for a whole party, right?

This is the first cosmo recipe I've seen with gin -- vodka is traditiional, and I find orange-flavored Absolut is the best --

Also, instead of triple sec, I use Cointreau --

I learned about these ingredients in a hotel bar in Baltimore -- the lovely town where Edgar Allen Poe drank himself to death.

Amount of cranberry juice seems on the high side; I find that really just a dash will do, that the cranberry is really more for color than flavor, and in fact if you can taste the cranberry it's not really a good cosmo after all -- don't you think? The predominant flavor should be sharp, tangy booze -- with only the slightess of sweet aftertastes. But I could be wrong.

I love Food Network, HGTV too. If ten years ago someone would have told me these as-yet-unborn networks would dominate my TV time. I would've laughed. I vaguely recall Food N. as having a drinking show once, but it was gone in an eyeblink. Pity.

Gin always gives me a headache, so I avoid it. But if you're a fan, you might want to try this martini recipe:

1. Get gin as freakin' cold as possible. Make it a major operation. Put it in the freezer overnight. Ernest Hemingway went so far as to freeze these ice container things: when it came out of the freezer this frozen ice ... sculpture, I guess ... looked sort of like one of those clay wine coolers you see in Europe, only it's made of ice. Hem. would take it out and pour the gin inside, let it sit a bit, then put to use. Anyway, the idea is not to drop the gin in a pitcher w/ ice -- won't get it cold enough, plus it will be contaminated by nasty water.

2. Get a saucer. Fill it with vermouth. Get your olive, spear it, then gently roll the olive in the vermouth.

3. Pour freakishly cold gin into ice-cold cocktail glass.

4. Put vermouth-soaked olive into drink.

5. Garnish optional.

Let me know how it goes!
