Songs about Cocktails and Drinking

Burlesque beauties, pinup girls, vintage fashion, swanky suits, go-go boots, hairdoos,
cocktails, recipes, dancing, nostalgia and random retro lifestyle that a Space Age Atomic Age Bachelor might need to know about. Post War movies, television, broadway shows, music... exotica, lounge, cocktail, vocals, standards, space-age, swing, tiki, Modern Transportation, 1950s 1960s classic cars, monorails, scooters, trailers and trains, oh my...

Songs about Cocktails and Drinking

Postby Cherry Capri » Fri Sep 08, 2006 10:42 pm

Dear friends,

I am looking to put together a list of popular songs that involve cocktails, martinis, alcohol, drinking, and other such sinful activity.

I would like them to predate 1970 if possible. Please add anything else you can think of. Thank you in advance.

Here is a small list I have already put together of ones I know:
Days of Wine and Roses
Tiny Bubbles
Tequila
Cocktails for Two
Rum and Coca-cola
One for My Baby
You Go To My Head
Cabaret
One Mint Julep

These came up in a search, but I don't know them. Do you know them?
The Martini - Fred Astaire
Hot Toddy - Julie London
Moonlight Cocktail - Ames Brothers
Scotch & Soda - Kingston Trio
Absinthe - Duke Ellington
Champagne Taste - Eartha Kitt
Delicious - Jim Backus & Friend

Cheers!
~CC

oh and they can be instrumental - not necesarily lyricly driven songs - as long as they have to do with cocktails.

Bottle of Wine (I remember Judy Collin’s version – could be others)
Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar) - the Doors
Show Me the Way to Go Home (I had a drink or two about an hours or so ago)
Hey Bartender
Chug-a-lug (Roger Miller)
The Night They Invented Champaign (Gigi)
Spoonful of Sugar (We know what medicine she was really singing about)
Champaign Time (Lawrence Welk)
and of course, 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

I know a few you asked about. I play them on my show (The Bachelor Pad):

Delicious - Jim Backus & Friend (Spoken word/comedy bit about two people getting more drunk as the song goes along)

Absinthe - Duke Ellington (Afro-Cuban jazz/exotica)

Hot Toddy - Julie London (A beatiful wordless vocal song from her)

To add to the list...Xavier Cugat did a whole album of drink-based songs called "Cugi's Cocktails." It's a crazy album he did in the mid-60's. Great stuff. The best part--it was recently released to CD. And it looks like you forgot another famous Cugat song, "Cuba Libre."

Now off the beaten path...

Pink Champagne--Joe Liggins & His Honeydrippers (jump blues)
Cocktails for Two--Art Tatum
Cocktails With Joey--Joey Altruda
Something Cool--June Christy
Moonlight Cocktail--Tex Beneke
What's the Use of Getting Sober (When You Gonna Get Drunk Again)--Louis Jordan

I have copies of all these songs if you need them.

Moonlight Cocktails was made by many different artists...my favorite being the Rivieras! Glenn Miller's version is also great.

Scotch and Soda is a good one.

Cocktails for Two by Spike Jones is funny.

Drinkin' Wine by Vernon Green & The Medallions is a great one.

Drink by the Jazz Butcher is post-70, but still one of the great swingin' lounge songs 'bout booze ever.

Mister Booze -- Bing, Deano, Sammy!
Booze Party -- 3 Aces and a Joker (might be my fave song ever)
Drinking Again -- Sinatra
Bubbles in the Wine -- Freddy Martin, Lawrence Welk
Drinking All My Troubles Away -- Paul Howard and his Cotton Pickers
Beer Bottle Mama -- Andy Reynolds and his 101 Ranch Boys
I Will Drink the Wine -- Sinatra, which starts with these sage words:

Someone said, drink the water, but I will drink the wine.
Someone said, take a poor man, rich don't have a dime.
So fool yourselves if you will, I just haven't got the time.
If you can drink the water, I will drink the wine.

Now, you could in theory say the Sonics' Strychnine should make the list, because it is, after all, about drinking something for the express purpose of getting all looped up!

Booze tunes

Postby Glen Leslie » Sun Sep 10, 2006 5:48 am

Hi all,

Great Thread!

I just wanna concur with Java:

Hot Toddy by Julie London is fabulous.

And Something Cool by June Christy, well I was driving home from work back during the heat wave of July and a DJ on KFAI in Minneapolis played this song. I almost had to pull over because I got so choked up. It's such a beautiful song. Weeks later I was at a record store in Waterville Maine and plunked down $10 for a mint copy. Now people who know me know I'm into the $1 record bin, and that's about it. So it's a big deal when I spend real dough on an LP, but I just felt it was a must have (though it turned up for like 40 cents just last week when I was on a big thrift dive through Illinois, so sometimes you get burned - hence the committment to the dollar bin -- but I'm not complaining, it's still worth it).

Anyway a couple of others:

I'm Always Drunk in San Francisco by Claire Hogan. Comes off a record called Boozers and Losers, so that covers a lot of ground.

Here's to the Lady's Who Lunch (from the Sondheim musical Company -- might be 1970 or 71 though. But this is a great drunk-singer song).

Good Luck on your hunt. I have all of the above if you need a copy.

Bob Dylan does a themed radio show on XM. He did a show about drinking. You can actually download a whole mp3 of the show here:
Here's the whole playlist (there are some repeats of songs already mentioned on this thread and a few might be post-1970):

Ain't Got no Money to Pay for this Drink - George Zimmerman and the Thrills
Wine, Wine, Wine - Electric Flag
Don't Come Home A Drinkin' - Loretta Lynn
Daddy and the Wine - Porter Waggoner
I Drink - Mary Gauthier
Sloppy Drunk - Jimmy Rogers
I Ain't Drunk - Lonnnie The Cat
It Ain't Far to the Bar - Johny Tyler and His Riders of the Rio Grande
Rum and Coca Cola - Andrew Sisters
1 Bourbon, 1 Scotch, 1 Beer - John Lee Hooker
Who Will Buy the Wine - Charlie Walker
Buddy Stay off the Wine - Betty Hall Jones
Whiskey You're the Devil - Clancy Bros and Tommy Makem
I Drink - Charles Aznavour
What's on the Bar - Hank Williams Jr.
One Mint Julep - The Clovers

I really like the Charles Aznavour and Loretta Lynn songs in particular.

I know that Eartha Kitt song "Champagne Taste." It's excellent, campy Eartha Kitt at her finest. I recommend it. I have an mp3 if you like or you can get it on itunes or amazon. It's on her "At the Plaza" cd
:d: With my champagne taste and your beer bottle pocket... :d:

Myron Floren, Accodianist

Postby mark71665 » Sun Sep 17, 2006 11:55 pm

http://www.welkshow.com/floren.html South Dakota-born Myron Floren got his big break when he met Lawrence Welk in 1950. (How many OTHER accordian players can make a full-time career out of it?) Had Mr. Floren not landed a job on the Lawrence Welk show, he'd be playing 'Beer Barrel Polka' Saturday nights at the VFW Hall. Lucky guy. Very LUCKY guy!!!
