VANITY FAIR
Watch Like an Egyptian
What was with the 1920s? One day they discovered King Tut’s tomb, the next day every city in America had to have a movie theater that looked like a ritzy Theban temple. The author embarks on a faux-Egyptian odyssey.

The Egyptian craze back then even reached the Salton Sea. The town of Niland was named as a contraction of "nile land".

This also probably created the fad for dates. The first Date Festival in Indio, 1924 I think, had exhibitions from every date producing country in the world. And it was a six-hour drive from Los Angeles back then.

I find it fascinating that Sid Grauman beat Egyptomania to the punch by two weeks as his Egyptian Theater opened slightly before the discovery of King Tut's tomb.

That kinda egyptian styled building (in kinda a state of decay) in Niland is the result of this? Kinda wondered bout that.
