In South L.A. . . .

THE Waffle Factory is open in the former Stan Kite restaurant, serving waffles "just about any way you want them," partner Cassie Lowe says. "We're the Waffle Factory, the General Motors of waffles."

This is a terrific win for the "General Motors of waffles!" Many of us remember Stan's Kite sitting there vacant year after year. We'd drive by and see that great kite-shaped sign and those elegant powder blue booths inside.

Eventually it all deteriorated and was vandalized. Even the sign collapsed and fell through the roof. After the building was red-tagged, Jay Platt and I met with Gerald Kobata of the nearby school to discuss its future.

Be sure to stop in, the owners are really friendly and excited to be re-opening Stan's Kite for the neighborhood after all the years!

And there's LOTS of amazing architecture to see along that entire stretch of Vermont, right Chris?!

XLNT!
I have some pics on my site from when the place was closed from a few years ago. I thought this place was a goner. Great to see it's reuse. I need to get over there and take pics of the place now.

A friend from Tiki Central recently asked me about "Vintage Hollywood" a nightclub at 4000 W. Washington Blvd. They wanted to know what it was built as. Guess what? It was another Kite Coffee Shop! Opened in 1964, it was most recently a comedy club called "Mixed Nuts."

Our friends at West Adams Heritage Association report that the Kite on Washington is threatened by a new development. They also report that it was designed by Stiles O. Clements?!
