Slideshow essay on the building of an unbuilt FLW (LA Times)

"Three years ago, Times staff writer Diane Haithman traveled to Lake Mahopac, N.Y., to report on a retired contractor's attempt at a rare feat: to take one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s unbuilt designs and construct it exactly as Wright intended. Haithman recently went back to see the finished house and spoke with its owner. What follows is a photo tour of the home believed to be the first, since the architect's death, to rise on its intended site."

Could someone please photo-shop and remove the velcro plant-on
rocky bits. Such an incredible house, but i can't see it past the one
giant flaw...and it is everywhere, except the one bedroom which is lovely.

This house has gotten so much press since last fall. The defending of the
'rocky bits' seems to dominate most articles.

Oddly underwhelming. The rock/morter thing just looks wrong. The red floors seem kind of garish too - not as subdued as in older Wright homes. Despite the wood and stone the rooms seem sterile and barren. Hard to put my finger on it but it just doesn't work for me.

Rocky Bits

I have to agree, the rocky bits are most unsettling. Perhaps the red concrete will mellow with age.

Does anyone have any information on the stuck on rocks? Is it just bad owner taste? Do you suppose those walls were supposed to be like Taliesin West? But the local building authorities would not allow it? And this is the way the owner "interpreted" that look? It's really a puzzle. I guess the next owner can chisel them off.

As to the floors, in the pictures they look painted. But if they are in fact colored concrete, it will fade in time. Unless of course the owner decided to use some new extreme process that holds color better. Often for the very rich, too much is just enough. They seemed to have missed the gluttony memo. :D

It appears to be painted. I don't remember the red one the exterior
concrete in earlier photos. And it is wearing off in areas already. A
concrete stain is always a better option, or even better, mix it into
the concrete early on. I believe it can be added after the pour, mixed
into the top layer when troweling. (a challenge to get it even)

Such a bright red usually fades to a pink, but in this instance i think it
may wear off before it gets a chance. What a mess.
A little burnt umber and dot of black in the paint may have been a
better choice.

Paint companies make such great claims when it comes to addhession,
but something went wrong and most likely the prepping of the surface
before painting...

It says in the article that he's gotten a lot of criticism on the rocks - seems he used the natural stone from the island and had to jut them out due to "required" insulation in the walls. I feel they could have been done better, plus he could have back cut the stone for all that.
