Clearman's Village going in 2005

Postby khummer » Sat Dec 06, 2003 6:45 pm

In San Gabriel, a 34 yr. landmark the BOAT and Clearman's Village as we all know it on Huntington Dr. will be torn down to make a KOHL's. The Boat might be moved to where Steak and Stein is. At least the boat is still sailing, and orthwood Inn will remain. Shops have until from March to September to vacate.

'Boat' eatery ordered to move

Galley site planned to become Kohl's

By Andrew Blazier , Staff Writer

A 34- year-old San Gabriel Valley landmark will be demolished next spring to make way for a
Kohl's Department Store .

Galley Restaurant , the vacant
Steak 'N Stein building and most of the
Clearman's Village shopping center in San Gabriel will be torn down to prepare for the Wisconsin-based discount department store, which is due to open in late 2005, said Jerry Galipeau, the president of Clearman's Village.

Kohl's Corp. officials on Friday did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Also known as "the boat' by longtime patrons, the Galley moved to unincorporated San Gabriel from Monrovia in 1969, according to the
Clearman's Restaurants Internet Web site. Most of the building will be demolished, Galipeau said. However, the company will attempt to move the boat to the Galley's new site, an 8,500-square-foot building at the location of Steak 'N Stein.

The addition of Kohl's was needed to attract a much larger customer base than the current tenants, Galipeau said. He said he hopes increased traffic will improve business for neighboring stores, including Galley and
North Woods Inn , which will remain intact.

"It just didn't draw the customers in that we needed to help our restaurants out,' Galipeau said.

Store owners at Clearman's Village, located at the southwest corner of Huntington Drive and Rosemead Boulevard, said they have been told they must vacate the property between late March and September 2004, depending on their leases.

In addition to the shopping center, a dental office, dry cleaner and five rental homes will be leveled to expand parking facilities to 650 spaces. The new Kohl's is expected to employ 150 people and occupy 98,497 square feet on two floors.

Demolition is expected to begin late next year, Galipeau said.

As early as April, some tenants were told their leases would be converted to month-to-month rental agreements. Since then, several tenants have either closed or relocated elsewhere in the Valley. Only three stores remain open at the shopping center.

"I knew this was going to happen eventually,' said Aron Nickleson, 54, who has owned
Aron's Square Dance Shop at the center since 1993 and worked at the store for more than 20 years. Nickleson said he received written notice of the construction in late November but suspected the center would close more than a year ago.

"It's sad,' Nickleson said. "You can be mad and upset, but it doesn't do any good. That's called progress, and I understand that.'

Another tenant was less diplomatic.

Wally Hage, 75, of Arcadia complained that Clearman's still has not notified him of the Kohl's addition, only saying his
Doll House Lady Miniatures store's lease has become an indefinite rental agreement.

"I've been here 18 years. Why wouldn't you tell me how long I've got?' Hage said.

Just got a tip that our beloved Clearman's Village was demolished. The Galley (boat) restaurant is closing on Jan. 14 and that the Kohl's project is steaming ahead - unlike the boat, which may or may not be incorporated into a new Galley restaurant on the site of the abandoned Steak 'n Stein, which is also being demolished. Aarrggh!

Pieces of Clearman's are now on sale at Silver Lake Yards underneath the 4100 Bar at Sunset Junction.

Incidentally, they also have pieces from Santa's Village which was just/is being demolished.

As of Sunday night, the demolition fence is up, the bricks are being removed by hand and someone has cut out the portholes on the boat with a saw.

I loved that funky complex.... Clearmans was like a Bavarian castle in comparison.
...someday that Kohl's will be torn down, when everyone is finally exhausted of the maddening, soul-deadening homogenized landscape of false choices and commodity lifestyles.

one can dream anyway

The new "boat" will never be our Boat. If you drive past you'll see that they're actually constructing a boat in front of the new Galley restaurant.

The new boat is still under construction, or is it partial "re" construction?
