The nearly 50-year-old stage just west of downtown, where the owner crafts
most of the puppets, is behind on mortgage payments. But he is determined
that the show will go on.

From the outside, the low-slung, white concrete building huddled underneath
the Beverly Boulevard bridge looked like any other building in its
industrial area just west of downtown, adorned with razor wire and a
forbidding exterior.

Forget Citigroup, Puppet Show Needs a Bailout
By JENNIFER STEINHAUER

LOS ANGELES — There are many ways to measure California’s tanking economy: an 8.2 percent unemployment rate; a multibillion-dollar state budget gap; threatened endowments of the city’s museums, causing some cultural institutions to nearly default on mortgages; and the continued weakening of the Hollywood studio system. But the meltdown of the marionettes may say it all....

L.A. to consider landmark status for puppet theater
Fans turn out at a commission meeting to voice support for the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, which is struggling to stay afloat.
By Bob Pool
February 6, 2009

Pinocchio danced on the table and wise-cracking Fred Mingo sat on it Thursday as they helped convince Los Angeles officials to consider making a marionette theater near downtown an official city cultural site.

Fans of longtime puppeteer Bob Baker pleaded for his puppet stage and workshop at 1345 W. 1st St. to be protected with the landmark designation as they struggle to keep the Bob Baker Marionette Theater afloat.

Baker, who turns 85 on Monday, was at the Cultural Heritage Commission's City Hall hearing to support the idea. He showed up stringing Pinocchio along...

From the folks working on the Bob Baker landmark nomination:

First and foremost, big THANK YOU’S to ALL who have already sent in or emailed your LETTERS OF SUPPORT to the LA City Cultural Heritage Commission. On February 19th your positive letters of support resulted in the Commission accepting the nomination application for review and consideration and set up the Commission’s site visit to the theater on March 5th. During this time Richard Shuler has received preliminary verbal confirmation of CD 1, Councilman Ed Reyes’s support for approval of this nominated landmark in his district.

1. BETWEEN NOW AND APRIL 2ND, SUPPORTERS who have not already sent in or emailed their letters of support for approval of THE BOB BAKER MARIONETTE THEATER nomination as a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument, THIS IS THE TIME ! !

Please address your letters of support to:

Cultural Heritage Commission
c/o City Hall
200 N.. Spring Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012

Letters can be emailed to: edgar.garcia <at> @ lacity.org on or before APRIL 2nd.

The Commission staff has informally told us that on Thursday, April 2nd, at the regular CHC meeting, the Commissioners will vote on whether to recommend to the LA City Council, approval of The Bob Baker Marionette Theater as a LA City CH Monument. The full LA City Council has the final vote on the nomination’s approval. Once we are notified of the scheduled date of LA City Council meeting when the FINAL VOTE is taken, we will let you know. Scheduling of all meetings and agendas open to the public are posted on the LA City website: http://ww.lacity.org/ <http://ww.lacity.org/>

The Cultural Heritage Commission (CHC) meetings and agendas are listed under the City Planning Department (PLN) heading. On the left side of the LA City home page there is a menu for ENS—Early Notification System—where you can sign-up to receive email notices of your selected City Council or City Commission meetings and agendas, automatically.

2. There is an on-going need for fundraising to stabilize the theater’s monthly income, due to the loss of revenue from LAUSD budget cutbacks. LAUSD has cut all its community arts programming with local arts organizations.

If can help out in organizing fundraising efforts, please call Richard Shuler or Marilyn J. Prewoznik at (213) 250-9995 .

Hi, this is Lauren here (the applicant for BBMT). Just wanted to let whomever is interested know that the CHC approved the nomination unanimously (sp?), and now it's on to PLUM!

It was such an easy vote that they didn't even want to hear another presentation, which I take as a great sign. Hopefully some good fund-raising opportunities are on the way for the theater, as they still need all the help they can get. Go see a show!

L.A. puppet troupe wins landmark status from City Council

The Bob Baker Marionette Theater, described as the country's longest-running puppetry showcase, has been giving performances at the West 1st Street stage since 1962.
By Bob Pool
June 4, 2009
A parade of puppets managed to string along Los Angeles City Council members long enough Wednesday to persuade them to designate a West 1st Street marionette theater as a historic-cultural landmark.

The animated figures danced and pranced atop the council's ornate horseshoe-shaped desk in the City Hall chambers before officials voted 14 to 0 to place the Bob Baker Marionette Theater on the monument list...
