Garden Grove bank images below (camera phone--sorry). Mosaic murals on facade, and north and south walls.

There is also a painted mural inside the bank, above the teller counter, which I didn't photograph because I didn't want to deal with security. Don't know if that is original or significant.

It's a progressive theme: wilderness, early settlers taming the landscape, and then space...the final frontier. Look how far Downey had come by mid-century. This is one of my favorite Sheets mosaics. Such optimism!

I have pictures for Arcadia, and it is as beautiful as it ever was. Will post pictures when I figure out how!

Also, to all those who did post pictures, would you mind emailing them to me, so that I might include them in ModCom's official survey...?
Please label pictures with their address. regina@reginaobrien.com
This is a great help!

Palos Verdes mural is restored!

Postby lauramueller » Sat Jan 23, 2010 4:56 pm

I have always enjoyed the mosaics and am just learning about Millard Sheets and the various sites. Here in Palos Verdes, they have just restored the mosaic mural. Here is a link to the newspaper article

Closed, Washington Mutual interior. Signed mosaic on front, stained glass on back. I believe they both depict nearby Grant Rea park, with it's horseriding and (since replaced) carousel.

Nice, midcentury building, but no visible art. Pebble panel facade, pebble paneled walkways, floating staircase, integrated planters, compromised by remodels.

This branch appears to have moved and been rebuilt in 1989. Shopping center at former address. This is probably the only "urban" theme among the works and certainly the newest. Ceramic mural facing Atlantic.

A TwoFer!

7964 Beach Blvd, Buena Park -- this location has a mural by Susan Hertel out front and a painting of a carousel inside. The security guard asked me not to take photos of the outside of the building. Mural depicts a ghost town, train, masked bandits on horseback, and an Indian talking to a guy with spooky eyes and pickaxe.

Image
Image

While I was standing on the corner getting the wide shot of the building, I looked across Beach Blvd and what did I see?

8010 Beach Blvd, Buena Park -- now a retail store called Attic, but its Home S&L roots still show through with a gold stripe and a weird-ass mural of people frolicking with farm animals -- one of which appears to be impaled on a pole.

Image
Image

Kind of makes me wonder if any other early era buildings were replaced but left standing...

This is 11922 Brookhurst St in Garden Grove. Nredom has provided photos, to which I'll add these:

Image
A shot of the building, in case anyone's interested, and this detail from the mural. I can't connect this with any of the names we've seen so far.

I also visited the Anaheim building at 101 S Harbor Blvd, and confirmed that it is a twin of the Santa Monica location, down to that V shaped wall jutting out of the back that blocks the view of the stained glass. Minor differences involve the placement of doors, and in Santa Monica, they've screened off the stained glass inside the store -- here, it's outside. You can't even tell it's there. I tried Chris' trick of asking the security guard to take a photo for me, but he said he couldn't. The very nice scene depicts -- what else? -- horses.

I have some closeups of the main figures in the mural, if anyone wants them...

7141 Pacific Blvd, Huntington Park. This location has a mural in front and back. Front:
Image
Spanish Dons and their families watch a cattle drive in the distance.
Image
The initials S.H * M.S. can be seen in the lower right corner.

This closer detail of the cattle drive is in back.

These photos were shot on Sunday (1-31-10), so I couldn't go inside. But apparently there is a Susan Hertel oil painting inside depicting a Mexican fiesta that measures roughly 6x40 feet.
