For those of you just joining us. We're documenting all of the Home Savings buildings mainly identifying the artwork by Millard Sheets and his colleagues. Please join us in photographing the remaining locations and posting here. Thanks!

Pomona's Chase Bank building under watchful eye of preservationists

Monica Rodriguez, Staff Writer
Created: 10/31/2010 03:59:15 PM PDT

POMONA - To some, the Chase Bank building on the southwest corner of Garey Avenue and Second Street downtown is simply a place to take care of financial matters.
To members of Pomona's preservationist community, the building is an important part of the city's history and an example of the work artist and Pomona native Millard Sheets did for financier Howard Ahmanson.

For that reason, they are seeking to have the city designate the building a historic landmark...

New Balance has opened in the Santa Monica location, and I stopped in yesterday. A construction worker had told me they were going to uncover the stained glass, but it now has a translucent scrim over it. An employee told me there were problems with the morning sun, so they went with this compromise.

Also, I was hoping that they would clean up the gold band around the roof while they were working on the building, but they didn't. It looks kind of ratty.

I finally went back and checked out the inside of the Burbank B of A on Olive that may be the remains of a Home Savings. Nada. Very unornamented except for a few framed scenic photos.

Former Home Savings in Hemet

Postby jonu » Sat Jan 01, 2011 10:59 am

Stopped at a Chase Bank in Hemet.

105 N Cawston Ave
Hemet, CA 92545

There were murals on the Florida Avenue side.
I didn't have a camera, but I grabbed these images off of Google Earth.

And, I found this article about the muralist, Denis O'Connor.
http://www.pe.com/localnews/hemet/stori ... 59094.html

It seems he worked with Sheets.
Not sure if these murals were done in conjunction with Sheets.

4650 Mission Bay Drive, San Diego CA 92109

Another one from outside LA – Pacific Beach (San Diego) – on a prominent corner (Garnet Ave and Mission Bay Drive) with an expansive lawn, terraced walkways and a fountain. The building is set on a 45 from the street, so there’s lots of public space out front. Murals all around; not sure what’s inside. No photos of my own, but scabbed onto someone’s flicker.

That "someone" is me. I took that shot of the one in San Diego. Happy to help. There are several others in San Diego that I didn't see on your list, by the way.

Another one to add to the list...
1980 (construction date):
6570 Magnolia Ave
Riverside CA

It is currently a medical supply office.
I confirmed on Riverside's website (permit archive) that it was built as a Home Savings.

I'll try to take some pictures next month although the murals are visible on Google Earth.

(I also try to take pictures of the Hemet branch documented in an earlier post.)

This is five shots stitched together and spruced up in Photoshop. I tried to clean up the gold bands a bit. The fountain out front has been turned into planters.

I don't see it anymore in Google's aerial view, at least not where it used to be on Plummer, but it was still there and being used just before the Northridge quake.

New photos of the Pomona branch.

Millard Sheets, 1963
Date taken: 2/1/2012

The building is now wrapped Christo-style, unlike in the previous photo posted by Nichols, because Chase believes it poses a danger.

I couldn't find a signature or initials on the mosaic.

Reviving this thread to let folks know about Curbed LA's "Sheets Week -- a five-day festival for artist and architectural designer Millard Sheets. All Sheets Week we'll be learning about Millard and his life and work, and taking photo tours of some of his buildings, courtesy Curbed LA photographer Elizabeth Daniels."

Draft EIR for "The Village at Westfield Topanga"

21816 Victory Blvd., Woodland Hills

"...The building comprises one story and is approximately 25 feet in height... The north (front facade of this retail building consists of beige stone cladding. Additionally, glass windows and glass doors make up the front entrance, and a ceramic tile mural of a landscape has been painted above a second set of glass display windows. This mural was created in 1989 and has no historical designation. The roof of the building is flat and finished with decorative moldings...No historical resources have been identified within the project site boundary. Therefore no impact to historical resources would occur."

Adam Arenson calls this "The Last Home Savings," and attributes the artwork to Marlo Bartels and Astrid Preston and gives a date of 1989 for the piece.
