The Romania Showroom is a special, landmark structure for Eugene and it deserves to be preserved as an important example of our local, architectural heritage.

This modern, Googie-styled auto showroom/display pavillion is a strong candidate for registry in the National Register of Historic Places. Sadly, wonderful examples of Googie architecture such as the Romania Showroom are lost each year. These architectural testaments to local development cannot be replaced once lost.

Style & Vernacular - A Guide to the Architecture of Lane County, Oregon (1983 Western Imprints - The Press of the Oregon Historical Society and Southwestern Oregon Chapter/AIA) describes the showroom's curved form as suggesting "the dynamism of the auto in motion..."

Eugene Modernism 1935-1965 (2003 Historic Preservation Northwest and the City of Eugene Planning and Development Department staff) describes the former auto showroom as "the strongest example of Googie in Eugene."

A thoughtful development plan that includes local business owners, the University, Fairmount Neighbors, and the City of Eugene could allow for necessary and vital growth while simultaneously preserving this unique, long-standing city icon for another 50 years and beyond. A productive and meaningful new function for this landmark structure must first be identified. Please send your feedback/support to Andrew at info@eugenemodern.org.
