Welton Becket building with a view to LAX

9800 Sepulveda Blvd, now for sale at $20M. This 1964 building, borrows from the 1940 Palazzo della Civilta Italiana by Giovanni Guerrini, Ernesto Bruno La Padula and Mario Romano, that looks congruent with the 1939 New York World's Fair. It is ironic that Welton Becket would use this style while at the same time working on the far more futuristic looking General Electric Pavilion for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. The building 9800 South Sepulveda has sat vaccant for years, its only function is hanging building wrap supergraphics on the North and South sides that earn about $100K per month.

That's the McCulloch Building, completed in 1964 and designed by Welton Becket & Associates as part of the first phase of the Becket-master-planned International Airport Center adjacent to LAX. Another Becket building in that development, the circular Security First National Bank, International Airport branch, completed in 1963 with the spectacular, pre-cast roof has already been demolished. That building was featured in the "Lost Becket" section of the Modern Committee's 2003 Built by Becket tour booklet.

The McCulloch Building employs many of the design characteristics that were used by Edward Durell Stone in his works of New Formalism, including the perforated soffit and the series of tall arches forming an arcade that encircles the ground floor.

Thanks Vavala - I knew this was a United Bank once but found scant info online for the building or its original name. Becket did carry the circular theme to the lobby. The ceilings have a suspended waffle grid for services but not the precast shape for structure. Where can one see the "Modern Committee's 2003 Built by Becket tour booklet" ?

I'm still curious as to why they lifted this design:
