Santa Monica Civic Auditorium - Your help is needed today!

Postby SFG » Thu May 26, 2011 3:09 pm

Please attend the meeting tonight at City Hall - Thursday, May 26th, 5:30pm or send your comments immediately to the e-mail address below:

Your help is needed today! Plans for renovation of the Civic Auditorium, to revitalize the under-utilized landmark as a premier theater and concert venue while supporting many current community uses have been underway for several years. Redevelopment funds were to be the main source for the project, which requires seismic strengthening, ADA access, and updating of performance capabilities.
City Council, acting also as Redevelopment Agency, approved a group of projects for redevelopment funding on Tuesday, May 24th, but withheld approval on the Civic Auditorium for a continued public hearing TONIGHT May 26, first on the agenda at 5:30 PM.

Given the immediacy of this issue, we are asking our members to contact City Council to express their support of the staff recommendation to allocate $46.8 M to the Civic Center renovation. Please send your message right away, to council@smgov.net, and if you can, come to city hall tonight at 5:30 to speak.

Your voice will make a difference!

Talking points:

The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium is an iconic City Landmark, renowned for its mid-century modern design by architect Welton Beckett as well as for its innovative engineering.
The futuristic pylons are similar to the LAX Theme Building, expressing the promise of the space age and emblematic of Santa Monica’s progressive identity.
The Civic Auditorium has played a central role in the cultural life of the City, as a site for the Academy Awards, concerts both classical and popular, expositions, and a site for the Santa Monica Symphony and Stairway to the Stars.
The renovation will reposition the Civic Auditorium as a cultural center in the heart of downtown, near adjacent hotels, benefiting the City’s tourist and visitor business activity.
The renovation will provide necessary code updates and facility upgrades to revitalize the use of the Civic for multiple purposes.
The Council voted equivalent funding for the new Palisades Garden Walk. The Civic Auditorium is its historical and cultural partner across Main Street, a vital element of our Civic Center, and very much in need of renovation to continue as a contributor to Santa Monica's cultural life and economy.

In today's SMPD, loud mouth Bill Bauer calls Welton Becket a "mediocre mid-20th century architect," and calls the Civic Auditorium a "big, ugly box."

It's under "My Write" on page 4. Anybody have a response to his claims about the Civic's viability as a venue?

So, no one here has posted about the current threat to the Civic Auditorium? It's about to be "mothballed" (read: left to rot) at the end of the month and quite probably demolished soon.
