Montclair High School - 1958-59 State of the Art

Postby ModernGuy64 » Sat Oct 29, 2011 11:02 pm

On May 28, 1958, in Montclair, California, a ceremony was held for the groundbreaking of a new, "state of the art" Montclair High School that would open in the fall of 1959. It was to be built with all of the modern aspects that any high school could have been built with then, including a full-size air-conditioned auditorium, little theater, air-conditioned and heated classrooms, full-size cafeteria, a diving an olympic-size pools and enclosed quad. Another thing it had was instead of the regular bells, soft music would be played over the intercom system to signal students of passing periods. It was an entirely new concept never heard of at that time. The design of the school screamed mid-century style and 1950's modernism, and still does to this day.

Actually, not bad for being for being 52 years old. The district has made all efforts to keep the school in good condition and in repair. All of the original lighting fixtures, air conditioning/heating units, ceiling acoustics and floor tile have either been removed or upgraded. Renovation is still being done, I'm told.

Here are some pics of the school now

Those diagonal steel pipes attached to the I-Beams really bother me. What are they? Ick.
