here's that photo from the OC Weekly - they didn't give a photo credit... boy this sure brought back memories - are ANY of these still standing anywhere with original sigange like that? And look at that gas firepit!
I have seen sad broken down bells around town, but nothing like this in years.

Wooah! That Taco Bell sign gave me a big flash of deja vu!!

"Taca-taca-taca Taco Bell."

Here's an interesting excerpt from John Love's book, McDonald's: Behind the Arches (page 26-27). The time frame is the early-'50s:

"Even some of their steady customers began copying the brother's fast-food concept. Glenn Bell, a telephone repairman, was a regular patron of the McDonald's drive-in in San Bernardino before its conversion to fast food. When he saw the business that the brothers were doing in the remodelled unit, he persuaded home builder Neal Baker, a close friend, to build him a self-service restaurant. After erecting Bell's first unit, Baker decided to start his own San Bernardino chain of fast-food outlets. Still others followed Bell and Baker, and soon the rush to imitate the McDonald brother's bonanza was converting San Bernardino into a fast-food haven. However, it was Bell who became the most celebrated of the local McDonald's copiers when he extended the fast-food concept into the ethnic market with a Mexican restaurant chain bearing his name: Taco Bell."

Ok, it has taken months for me to track down this old Taco Bell sign. I knew where it was but kept treking down the wrong street to find it.

Finally, look for the sleepy Taco Bell on the street that time thankfully forgot: Washington Blvd, East of Lincoln. The bell itself is gone, but the old signage remains. The sombrero/bell backlit plexi sign, and the latino/goth font are still there on the mission revival facade.

The Bell will be on the North side of the street almost directly across from an original Shakey's Pizza sign and backlit plexi Shakey's Chef.

The Taco Bell #1 store in Downey opened in 1962 and was slightly different than the 1964 protoype store pictured above. It was designed by Robert McKay - who would go on to become president of Taco Bell. The Downey store was simpler, architecturally - it didn't have the arched top over the bell. It was also part of a "Taco Village" of sorts - where Mexican theme shops surrounding Taco Bell would accompany the dining experience. I understand there is an independent taco stand operating there to this day.

I highly recommend "Taco Titan" - the story of Glen Bell.
