Bullock's Pasadena

Postby rlcrane » Tue Nov 26, 2002 9:25 pm

The new development that surrounds (chokes?) Bullocks Pasadena is nearing completion. Some of the tennants have already moved in. I suspect that Macy's will now be looking to embark on a hacky renovation of the Bullock's interior to make it fit in with the new stucco-land. Is Bullock's Pasadena protected in any way?

A resident of the area told me that Pasadena will have yet another movie theater complex in that area. :x However, movie theaters have been announced in Pasadena before and never reached fruition.

I bet parking meters will be added to the area in front of Burger Continental, Penny Lane, etc. :o

From what I've seen Macy's is doing some touch-up painting and replacing cracked linoleum with like materials. The store management is aware of the historic nature of the place and has no plans to make any changes. I'll let everyone know if I see anything going on inside the building.

Macy’s Pasadena Closed for Seismic Upgrades & Renovations
Macy’s (formerly Bullock’s) Pasadena, designed in 1947 by Wurdeman & Becket is one of the finest examples of Modern architecture in the city. The Late Moderne structure was recognized almost immediately as a masterpiece, as the architects were presented with an Award of Merit from the American Institute of Architects in 1950; in 1952 the Pasadena-Foothill chapter of the AIA declared the building one of the “outstanding examples of architecture constructed in the last 50 years.â€￾ Pasadena Heritage nominated the building to the National Register of Historic Places, where it was recognized for having outstanding significance and listed before reaching the benchmark of 50 years old, and we fought inappropriate development on the site that was ultimately settled by a lawsuit.

Macy’s will be closed from May – October 2008 for seismic upgrades and some interior renovations. The sheer walls are the original 1946 construction, and no seismic upgrades have been done from that time. In previous earthquakes there has been damage to the stairwells which was never adequately addressed. The structural engineers discovered that there are non-continuous sheer walls around the perimeter, which means that part of the building sites on unreinforced beams. These issues will be addressed during the current project, which includes adding some new shear walls and shoring up the existing structural walls. Pasadena Heritage has reviewed their structural plans, which have a limited impact on historic fabric. We have had several meetings with Macy’s representatives to discuss the plans, and they assure us that the store will reopen. We have also toured the store and discussed the important existing historic features that need to be maintained, and a follow-up meeting is scheduled for the end of May to discuss their specific plans for the interior.

Macy's to reopen in November

Lake Avenue store was closed for remodeling, seismic updates
By Kevin Smith, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 09/08/2008 05:24:39 PM PDT

PASADENA - Macy's is gearing up to reopen its Lake Avenue store in Pasadena with a newly revamped interior and significant seismic upgrades.
The store closed down in late April as the work began and all 300 employees have been temporarily assigned to other nearby store locations during the construction period.

"There have not been any job losses," said Del Hernandez, Macy's vice president and manager of the Pasadena store. "We're expecting all of our employees back."

A grand reopening and community shopping day is scheduled for Nov. 22, featuring fashion shows, special guests and entertainment...

Pasadena Macy's looks to past amid today's economic trials

By Daniel Tedford, Staff Writer

PASADENA - The hand-painted wallpaper in cosmetics and the wood finishing in the children's department harken back to a different time.
Old fireplaces have been unwrapped from walled packaging, brick and tile floors have been restored where possible and classic murals have taken on a new focal point at the Pasadena Macy's at 401 Lake Ave.

The finishing touches are complete on Macy's months- long remodeling job as the store gears up for its grand reopening on Saturday...

Sounds good to me, given the earlier pessimism.

Those of us in SoCal should do all their "Macy's type" shopping here, to validate the company's investment.

PASADENA WEEKLY

Shoppers' paradise reborn
Historic Lake Avenue Macy’s store opens this weekend with a new ‘old’ look

By Joe Piasecki 11/20/2008

In the economic boon that followed the trauma of World War II, department store shopping was an important social experience.
A lady would meet friends for tea in such places, maybe even catch a fashion show. And she wouldn’t just pick something off a rack — it was a salesperson’s job to bring out several styles to choose from. Later, a doorman might place the purchase in the trunk of her waiting limousine.

Times certainly have changed, but Pasadena shoppers and architecture buffs can still get a glimpse of this opulent past during grand opening events Friday and Saturday for the newly refurbished Macy’s building at 401 S. Lake Ave.

The store has been shuttered since April to accommodate a $15 million-plus effort not only to enable it to withstand a major earthquake but also to preserve and, in some cases, resurrect important interior architectural details. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, nominated years ago by the preservation group Pasadena Heritage, which assisted Macy’s in planning its current restoration.

“There are just so many beautiful facets to this store. It’s one of those buildings that would be impossible to build the same way today,â€￾...

I just got back and Macy's did a fantastic job of restoring everything that remained and adding back pieces that must have been found in storage. The barber shop, the globe room and these newly uncovered fireplaces are really great and the store is a lot less crowded with merchandise than it was when it closed. Good Job!

It really is spectacular both inside and out and with free parking.
There is no comparison to the El Paseo version.
It also carries higher-end merchandise.

Macy's did an outstanding job with its magnificent, loving refurbishment of this landmark building. It is a dream come true. Concern about this building brought me to my first ModCom meeting how many years ago? so it is very near to my heart. Debra Levine

p.s. it is transformed into an incredibly chic contemporary shopping environment that New York or Paris would drool over; it is NOT a museum!

Best of both worlds: A chic shopping experience and a historical mecca, all with free parking!

Quite beautiful, were the fireplaces hidden behind false walls? Hard to imagine the equally stunning Robinson's - Beverly Hills is just languishing idle and uncared for, waiting for the wrecking ball.
