I noticed that the Pacific Sands Motel has now lost its trademark neon "Pacific Sands" from its pole sign as well. It's been replaced with backlit plastic in a standard typeface. I spoke with someone from their office and they mentioned the neon had needed repairs on a regular basis so they just did away with it altogether. Ocean Avenue isn't the same without that signage.

According to this article: http://www.smmirror.com/Volume1/issue34 ... nates.html

The Pacific Sands was granted special favors as a 'meritorious sign'
Doesn't that come with the responsibility to not demolish it with no review? Can they even have a backlit sign on the roof?

Yep! Here you go:

"...if the character defining features of a meritorious sign are altered, the sign shall be removed or where applicable, modified to conform to the requirements of this Chapter..."

The City Council finds and declares:

(a) An excess of large, ugly, intense signs causes a visual blight on the appearance of the City by detracting from views of structures and open space. This visual blight adversely affects the aesthetic quality of life and traffic safety in Santa Monica for residents, businesses, pedestrians, and persons in vehicles..."

So now they're not only ugly & intense, they're health & safety hazards!

There's so little understanding of signs and their intrinsic importance.
Pacific Sands is a huge loss, we should write a letter to the owners.

Well, they did remove the neon, since they demo'd the motel. I'm not sure when, but as of July 2010 there is a "Gensler" sign where the motel used to be. They also took down the TravelLodge next door, but I can't really remember what that looked like.
