Modern Churches in SoCal

Postby marino » Tue Jan 14, 2003 3:01 pm

Has anyone seen any interesting 60s churches/temples in the Los Angeles area, they'd like to mention?
An architectural not a spiritual quest :-)
Here is an example:
Image
That one is in LaVerne (Foothill and Ave D) and was filmed in "The Graduate', not to mention "Wayne's World II"

Thanks
Marino Pascal

Great topic Marino!!!

There are lots of great churches in the San Fernando Valley - including 2 that I know that were designed by A. Quincy Jones.

My all time favorite is the First Lutheran Church of Northridge by Orr, Strange, Inslee and Senefeld from 1964.
Address is 18355 Roscoe Blvd just east of Reseda Blvd.

This church was affectionately renamed by our own Troy Aloha (member of this Message Board) as the First Church of Elroy Jetson!

Image sorry it's not a great pic - but it's worth the drive to go and see it!

I posted some pictures here:

It's not all modernist churches but most of it is. There is an interesting one in West Covina that reminds me of Frank Gehry's Disney Hall.

There's a neat one in Echo Park at 1927 Riverside (across the street from the Colony Theater and not far from Stadium Way). It COULD be early '70s but no later than that.

I think Armet & Davis designed St. Jerome's.
They did many churches in addition to the
coffee shops we all know and love.

St. Christophers in West Covina
and
St. Martha's in La Puente
come to mind immediately. But they did dozens, if not hundreds, of churches in Southern California.
