Movieland Wax Museum to Close After 43 Years

By Dave McKibben, Times Staff Writer

When it threw open its doors in 1962, it was with all the hoopla of the Hollywood it was imitating. Searchlights combed the skies above Buena Park, a Mary Pickford look-alike cut a ceremonial ribbon and a freshly sculpted wax figure of James Dean greeted the guests.

Over the years, Movieland Wax Museum has held its own in a part of Orange County dominated by amusement alternatives such as Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland.

But today, citing a flagging customer base, the wax museum announced that it would be closing on Halloween. The owners said they also plan to close the nearby Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum.

The wax figures — there are more than 300 in the Beach Boulevard museum — will either be shipped to the museum's San Francisco location or auctioned.

Rodney Fong, whose family bought the museum in the 1980s, said it had slowly become a "third day attraction" with tourists.

With the addition of California Adventure in the Disneyland compound and new attractions at Knotts Berry Farm, the wax museum found itself competing with the beach and shopping malls on the must-see list in Orange County.

Fong said admission to both museums will be lowered to $5

I went there this afternoon for the first time in about 14 years (and went about 3 or 4 times back in the 80's when I was a kid) and was glad to get one last look. You can see that the older original figures are aging and have some discolorations, cracks, etc. but their quality compared to the ones done more recently is far superior. If you are able, go before the weekend because I'm sure it will be crowded. Can't beat the $5 admission & the gift shop had all kinds of Hollywood souvenirs at 50% off. Can't wait to see what they are gonna auction in a couple months!

And the 'policeman' moved, we thought is was a wax figure, but it was a real person!
It's going the way of the Japanese Village and Deer Park.

Fewer and fewer attractions along Buena Park's 'Entertainment Corridor'.

As you know the Movieland Wax Museum is shutting down for good. Tomorrow Leena has been allowed by the owner to document the collection this week . Help with photography would be greatly appreciated. She works at the Beverly Hills Public Library and would like to build an
archive collection on Movieland Wax Musuem. Any other
pictures, books, memorabilia would be appreciated. Her contact info is at the bottom, Thanks.

> Hi, I just found out the Movieland Wax Museum in Buena Park
> is closing. It was opened in 1962 and has over 100 Wax figures
> representing classic film and comedy stars. The opening day host was Mary Pickford.
> I meet the owner and he is allowing me to return to photograph the entire collection before it gets destroyed. I am not a professional photographer. I am looking for several photographers to assist me. This week Nov. 3 (Wednesday). I'm trying to get an extention for time, but it might not happen.
There is no pay. The photos can be used for your portfolios. The goal is to document the collection for archival purposes. It is a fragment of California and motion picture history.

I got in touch with Leena and the news is grim. She was not able to get inside the museum and document its figures and scenes. Apparently demolition of the interior began yesterday and no non-employees are allowed inside.

Leena is still working on her MWM archive for the Beverly Hills Library and is asking for any and all help in garnering memorobilia and photographs.

Do drop her an email if you have any images you would like to donate to this archive.

I noticed this in the free public galleries of a popular theme park amateur photographer over at one of the Disney fan sites, and thought I'd share with those interested -

Buena Park is marketing Beach Blvd. as an 'Entertaiment Corridor' as Movieland, Medieval Times, Some western horse/rodeo show and Knott's Berry Farm are all the attractions on that street, in fact down a little further is that Hobby City that has another theread on this bbs. I think like the area around Disneyland (to the east of there) they are trying to tidy up the area, gone are a couple of x-rated theaters and bookstores and I think they have minimized the 'streetwalkers' as well. So I'm not surprised that Movieland will be no more. So what are the plans for the land after it's gone? Big Hotel, some other amusement park, does/or did and indian tribe buy it and wants a casino? Oh and sadly the Buena Park city hall, a modern design is going away or is gone as well.
At least I did the tour there before it's outta business.
Sadly I never got to Japanese Village and Deer Park.

What the hell is a Starbucks doing stuffed in front like that?
What a mess.
Well....Fairwell Movieland, maybe I'll bid on set from 'The Posidien Adventure', I mean how many people can say they own a waxy homage to Ernest Borgnine and Shelly Winters?!

I was fortunate enough to go to MOVIELAND WAX MUSEUM with the folks from [Knotts Scary Farm Fans] before hitting Knotts for the Halloween Haunt .....

All I want to know is how can I get ahold of VINCENT PRICE's prints - signature in cement [so many celebs left their prints + signatures there out front]. I know seeing that STARBUCKS ruined it for me, but nothing will ever replace PO' FOLKS [that place is the best] ..... and yes Resorts like the CourtYard Marriott want to expand [plus Buena Park is dying to clean up Beach Blvd which I agree to an extent but damn don't give up on those cool places] ....

deer farm - gone
aligator farm - gone
wax museum - gone

life is just not the same "behind the orange curtain"
