Welcome to Jeff and to Carlos -- It's such a pleasure to be part of a busy and "happening" board, which attracts so many interesting and varied people !

It's amazing to find how many different aspects there are to Modernism. . .

"Black Orpehus" is a wonderful film; though it's been many years since I last saw it, I was mentioning it to a friend only last week. I well recall having a former girlfriend tell me to go see it, when it was new (1960 ?).
Breno Mello and Marpessa Dawn -- do I have that right ? Guess I could Google it to find out.

Attempting to Make Hello Interesting

Postby ginfor » Fri Dec 16, 2005 3:00 pm

Surely, there is some way to make, "Hi, my name's Forrest" more interesting. Or perhaps that explains something about why my first date came so late....
Modernism was always just one of many interests for me, with eclecticism more my style. Then I somehow became the voice in the wildnerness for West German pottery, but I still manage to lust after Arts and Crafts French pottery and a variety of other items in many styles.
Ginny and I collect and sell, although she actually has a real job teaching humanities/art history. I've been known to teach college level composition and literature, but that only happens during that all too brief period between getting hired and annoying some administrator. Still, I'll brag that I just got into Who's Who Among America's Teachers for the second time even though I haven't had a teaching position for 3 years.

And none of that puts money in the bank, so I'll break for a while from idealist and go back to some more mundane, money related activities.

Newbie in NYC

Postby modernismgirl » Sun Jan 01, 2006 12:39 pm

Hello all,

I just joined & I'm glad to see there are so many fellow modern lovers out there ! I live in NYC and have for 7 years now...I've been contemplating a move to the west coast (LA or SF) Is there anyone who lives out there now who used to live in NYC ? Any feedback, tips or pointers on making the move ? I really love all the modern architecture in southern Cali, and the weather, well compared to here - you can't beat it !

Thanks &
Happy New Year !!

Sure!

I live in Whittier, CALIF which has interesting older archetecture like a "Commerce Center" about 40 by 40 by 40 feet, on north side of Whittier Blvd., facing the beginning of Laurel St.and the Quad Center which itself (see my post to the MAY ROBINONS BH topic) which is historic.

I just wanted to introduce myself to the website. I'm an architect and I've lurked here for about a year. I finally signed on after the hubby and I finally bought our mcm home in Houston. As txmod can tell you, they are hard to find in this city, especially mcm's that aren't remuddled beyond recognition.

We were lucky to find a great mod in Memorial Bend that has most of its original interiors and exteriors. We're going to be doing some updating (rebuild the garage, rewiring the house) and restoration (replace alum. windows and doors, buff up those terrazzo tile floors) in the next few months so I'll post pictures in the "Modern Homes" forum soon.

add the links to your site:

eichlernetwork.com and eichlersocal.com

also google the names of some of the eichler tracts found on those websites, some of them also have websites.

Have fun exploring!

Hi!

Postby Retrovixen » Tue Jan 10, 2006 9:43 am

My name is Lyn, aka Retrovixen (in honor of one of my favorite vintage clothing stores that, sadly, went out of business). I recently found this site and was very happy to learn there are so many others who share my interest in MCM. I was trained as a costume and decorative arts historian, primarily 18th-20th century costume and furniture, but my personal interests are 20th century fashion and decorative arts. I especially love fashions of the 50s and 60s, particularly the Mods, and Mid-Century Modern furniture. Slowly but surely I'm transforming my apartment, once the site of a potato chip factory, into a mecca of Mid-Century Mod.

Thanks for listening, and I look forward to becoming an active member of Lotta Livin'.

By the way, can anyone help me with posting an Avatar? I see so many of you were able to upload your own pics, but I'm having trouble getting any of the pics I want to use to be 6 kb or less while being 80x80 pixels. I'm pretty Photoshop savvy but I just can't figure it out! Thank you in advance.

Hi, my name is Melissa.

I found this site through MySpace, when I signed the La Concha petition.

I live North of Seattle, Wa., and have never been to California (unless airports count), but I lived in Vegas for a month.

I have been interested in the past, past styles, architecure, signage, atomic, googie, cocktails, casinos, old school stuff, tikis, THE RAT PACK... ect, ect.... since as long as I can rememeber. :monkey:

I used to draw & make retro-inspired Jewelry.

I've been reading through this site for about a month, and it seems like everytime I visit, I learn something new... Its great!
I probably wont post too often -- but, well, you never know!

Proud new parents to a MCM

Postby glazier » Thu Jan 12, 2006 8:01 pm

My partner & I just purchased a MCM. A lovely little 1200 sq. ft. home that needs a lot of loving care . . . and money. Excited to read all the other homeowners and how they're helping their homes recover from a bad case of colonial home-itus!

Anyone know much about the Palmer & Krisel homes in the San Fernando Valley's North Hills?

Hi from chintz and magnolia-land

Postby MartiP » Mon Jan 16, 2006 3:55 pm

I thought I'd pop in and introduce myself (I've been lurking off and on for a couple of days). I'm Marti, hailing from Charleston SC. This place is chin deep in antebellum flourish, and while a lovely city in many ways, it's pretty suffocating (and I ain't talking about just the humidity.)

Hubby and I are not currently looking for a MCM home here as a) there are very few, and b) we have kiddos almost out of high school, so are hanging tight for a couple of years, when we'll downsize and move Southwest-ish (New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada...undecided, depends on job opportunities).

In the meantime, we keep collecting vintage furniture and funky stuff that looks COMPLETELY out of place in our current home, reading this forum, and dreaming. Thanks to all you regular posters, I am happily wading through old posts and flagging interesting things. Thanks for all the great ideas and links. :-)

Hello everyone,
Frist off, what a great site. I have been reading past post and looking at pictures for a few weeks. It is filled with great information.

I have always loved modern architecture. When I was a kid I would make foamcore and hot glue models of cantilevered homes. I went to school for product design at Pasadena Art Center where I learned all about Bauhaus
and great principles that came from there. Two year ago I randomly stumbled across a Richard Dorman house, fell in love with it, and bought it.
It has taken some time and effort to undo all of the crazy things that were done to the house (fake marble, french doors with hummingbird stain glass, bad lighting fixtures, Bad 1980s kitchen, ect)
I am excited about learing more and becoming more involved in Modern Preservation.

Sean
