The Miracle Mile was once famous for its beautiful Art Deco architecture. Time was not kind and many of the wildest examples are long gone, including the Melody Lane Restaurant. I'd vote to bring back this little gem if only to prove to the district's money-grubbing developers and their faux-historian that the beautiful Mile is not nor should ever be a high rise theme park of Miami Vice design. The Mile is/was a neighborhood of quaint, perfectly-scaled, historic, commercial buildings that are being dishonored by these developers' fake Art Deco skyscraper condominiums coated in balconies.

Welllll...if our hostess can pick two...besides, I'm picking one commercial and one residential. Here, Neutra's Von Sternberg house, where Ayn Rand wrote Atlas Shrugged.

Me and those 30s buildings, I know.

Residential: I, too, vote for the Von Sternberg/Ayn Rand residence, razed in the 1970's to feed the suburban cancer now known as Porter Ranch.

For commercial, the Ambassador Hotel.

Two more timeless victims of ignorance and greed.

The Pan Pacific Auditorium

Because it represents such a tragic loss…and unlike many lost landmarks, this one remained for years after it closed, waiting for a second chance that couldn’t be accomplished in 17 years before it finally burned. That should have been ample time for cooperative efforts to find a new use.
