If you remove the neon, destroy the cans and then build a replica using a different technology...is it preservation???

Whaaaaaaa?

Like to think someone in New York has heard of LA's reillumination of our multitudinous giant neon signs. In true New York fashion, I can only assume that somebody's cousin owns an LCD company, and he plays the ponies and owes some money to...never mind.

Sure, this is preferable to there being nothing there, but...is it preservation? No.

If those LED's are white, they'll never match the brightness of neon from what I've been told by some neon and lighting techs. Nor the lifespan. As for sign preservation, NOT...! A good example of neon preservation is that Pepsi sign they dismantled and moved. Nat'l Trust should do more fact checking, they recently ran an article on the Jersey shore south that talked about all the 50's motel districts. If they actually checked they'd see all that stuff has been torn down. No preservation done whatsoever. Nice to see the New Yorker back to life tho. Isn't there a hotel Pennsylvania in NYC?

The article says they used "LCD lights", which must be a typo. I did a quick search on the web and didn't find another article to clearify that. LCDs (liquid crystal displays) are used in computers, TVs, kiosks. They probably did mean LED (light emitting diode) lights, as MODCEPHALIC has suggested.

Either way, it dosen't seem like preservation to completely replace something with a replica. That is unless that something was a missing part of a larger picture (ex: recreating a missing sign while restoring a building).

There are LCD display applications but that would be even more off the preservation slope. Is there a closer shot of the letters?

New New Yorker sign...more info

Postby MODCEPHALIC » Wed Apr 19, 2006 6:34 pm

I was told the LED's on the Hotel New Yorker sign are actually red, thus the brightness can be equal to that of neon since this is the only LED color capable of matching its brightness. Yes, the original neon letter cans (in bad shape) had to be replaced (the original steel structural framework was deemed strong enough to remain).
The neon sign was originally installed in 1941 but had gone unserviced since the mid-1960's. The 1930 building, built with its own power plant, has been upgraded continually since new owners took over about 10 yrs. ago.
