Azusa Drive-In sign restoration?

Sign of the times
APU preserving drive-in marquee
By Kiersten Eaton Correspondent

AZUSA - Restoration of the landmark Foothill Drive-in Theater marquee is showing signs of life.
Azusa Pacific University and R&R Signs of Glendora have started working together to restore and preserve the historic Route 66 drive-in.

"It's going to take a lot of work to get in and figure out what we need to do," said Rick Rice, owner of R&R Signs.

According to Rice, about one-eighth of the sign's 500 bulbs glowed during a Jan. 24 test lighting, and those that did light were either dim or flickering.

The Los Angeles Conservancy nominated the drive-in property for landmark status Aug. 1, 2001, while the 17-acre site was still in escrow. Foothill was the last remaining drive-in movie theater on Route 66 west of Oklahoma.

The drive-in was placed on the California Historical Landmark Registry after the private evangelical college paid $6.1 million for it in the summer of 2001.

APU officials disagreed with the listing but did agree to spend $50,000 to refurbish it. Now it is used for campus announcements in English and Spanish.

The remainder of the property is earmarked for the university's 20-year growth plan that includes classrooms, dorms and other buildings on its east and west campuses.

R&R Signs assessed the sign two years ago to determine a cost estimate. That estimate is no longer accurate because the sign has continued to deteriorate. It also suffered some wind

damage during recent storms, according to Rice.

Rice hopes to begin the restoration work by May to allow time to process plans, receive materials and avoid seasonal rains that could damage the interior electrical systems.

According to APU's General Counsel Mark Dickerson, the start of restoration depends on the initial reports by R&R Signs, APU's agreement, and the City Council's approval.

The university must also raise sufficient funds to pay restoration costs.

At the last City Council meeting, the university and the council agreed to create the Azusa Foothill Marquee Preservation Fund to allow private donors to subsidize the $50,000 APU will contribute.

Dickerson hopes to see the sign fully restored by the end of the year.

"We'll keep going as quickly as we can," Dickerson said.

Once completed, the sign will again be lit on special occasions and used as an announcement board for community events.

Pasadena City College did a similar thing by destroying a googie coffeeshop back in '80s.

One would think that one of the roles of a college would be to set a standard and serve as role model for students with regard to history, preservation, and civic duty.

Of course, we're not exactly talking about a Socratic society here...

Neon uses less energy than light bulbs. Although that sign does have an awful lot of lightbulbs.

Anybody have a photo of the marquee that could get posted here for reference?

Yes, I have a Kodachrome slide of the sign at night from about 2000---it's not a great shot, but I will scan and post it this weekend....below is a link to a website I'm starting of shots around Los Angeles today in Kodachrome.

The marquee photo is up on my blog---it's at the bottom of the page...it's not a great, plus it's one of the first slides I took in Kodachrome in 2001 and I never got back to the sign again before it closed.

There aren't that many lightbulbs. After spending that highly inflated $50K to refurbish the sign, I don't see why the school won't light it up every night. Seriously, the APU is getting cheated if it's actually spending a whopping $50K to rehab that sign. I've seen much larger signs restored for half that amount.

I wonder if the sign restorer has a "friend" on the Azusa Board...Hmmm.

All the neon, all the bulbs, all the cans, all the plastic.. . every bit of electrical has been stripped from this sign. It's looking pathetic. What's going on in Azusa?

Hello !

My name is John and I am new to the board. I am a huge fan of LA history, and live near the old Drive in. Sadly I attend the very school that so carelessly gave the drive in the heave ho. I and a number of my friends in the art Dept tried to voice our opinions but the adminsitrators here gave us the cold sholder ( they don't like us artists)

The workers dismanteled the neon and primered the sign as you can see. As of yesterday it looks like they are testing red colorson the back of the sign. I sincerly hope they keep their promiss and restore it but with the way they have been treating us here in the Art Dept lately, it seems as if they would rather be making money than preserving.

I'll keep you guys postedon any news !

John

John, glad you could share your concerns...

Hello! John here !

Today I spotted workers applying steel sheet to the backs of the holes you see in the picture of the dismantled sign. Rust pactches perhaps?

I'll keep you posted !

I have (B/W) photos from the early '60s with the distinctive vertical stripe pattern that I remember from the '70s. I also have a 1981 photo with this turquoise and white stripe pattern that was painted out in the mid '90s.

Kathy, Jay, please make them aware of this.

Part of the Sign that was damaged when the knuckle heads took down the place blew down in yesterdays high winds here in Azusa. The Upper left hand side of the sign is no more. Lets hope they dont use this as an excuse not to go ahead with the "restoration." Ive seen the plans of what they plan to do with the property and the sign is no where to be found.

Hello !

I took some pics of the sign yesterday. You can see the damage the wind did last week. They have just put the cursive script on and placed bulbs too.

Will Keep posted,

John

We talked about this briefly at the Monday ModCom meeting and are very concerned that the cursive word "Azusa" at the top of the marquee appears to have been replaced with red backlit plastic. khummer told me she would look into it.
