this was to be condos developed by Magic Johnson's real estate group.
AT &T (the old one) used to be further north near the library-my brother used to work there. How it's all changed.

AT&T Center's Extreme Makeover

South Park's First High-Rise Dolls up for L.A. Live

BY Andrew Moyle

The AT&T Center in South Park, opened in 1965 as the Transamerica Center, will receive a major facelift. The building's owner announced the plan for the dramatic transformation at a Los Angeles Headquarters Association event last week.

The AT&T Center, long known as the Transamerica Center, will undergo an extensive renovation. Photo by Gary Leonard.

LBA Realty, which purchased the 32-story high-rise last year for $130 million, has tapped architecture firm Gensler to handle the modernization. The landmark structure was originally designed by architect William Pereira...

Mosaic Tile

Postby kentbulza » Tue May 30, 2006 10:23 pm

Hard to see...is that paint on the tile? That is SUCH a travesty. We gotta stop this one.

I don't think it's paint on the tile, but a film of some kind. There doesn't appear to be any texture of tile on the new spandrels so I'm assuming it's a new surface altogether covering the original tile.

Stripping the sunshades off is going to "modernize" it right into oblivion!

Accenting the building's verticality by painting the vertical fins a contrasting color without the buffering affect of the horizontal sunshades is going to destroy the original design and cheapen the building.

The TA building is already looking worse without the texture of those "sunshades".

Yes m-r-u, I agree, those remodellers are doing skyscrapers a disservice by making it look exactly like every other crappy skyscrapper on the horizon. They are removing the unique aspects of the TA building in order to make it appeal to the lowest common demonator.

But why would they do that? Is the TA building so horribly outdated? Were its tenants screaming for more direct sunlight to hit their computer monitors?

What new tenants could its owner want? A school for the blind perhaps.

Yes.... texture, depth, play of shade and shadow, whatever you want to call it, this building had it! Now it does not.

Just look at those before and after photos. They stripped this building's soul. Such a loss.

Perhaps archiphile will come back and tell us what it is he or she likes about the building now.

Yes, the building could be called the Occidental/TransAmerica/SBC Global/AT&T Building.

Or you could just call it the OTASBCGATT Building for short.

They are almost through three sides of the Tower building – only the east-facing side remains original. The Hill and Broadway buildings haven’t been touched yet. The photo above, that shows a small section in white, could be deceiving – it is still just that small section in white. And the drawing on the sign does not really look like that. Without regard to its new look (kind of world trade centerish – which I thought was unremarkable architecturally, although I loved its profile on the NYC skyline), I just don’t get why they would go through all that expense.

Anyway, I’ll post a couple of newer photos below. (I have more if you want, but I don’t think they add much to the discussion.)

The real treat on this visit was checking out the Neon Museum, which is near the Transamerica building. It was like a good desert – the portions were small leaving you wanting more, but what was there was very tasty. The building housing the museum, the park around it, and the public art there (lots of fine mosaics) were also exceptional. I’ll post a couple of those here too – lots more if you want on request. I almost bought one of your photos, Lynxwiler, but $40 – that’s a week’s worth of In-N-out burgers!

This is the south side, that has been mutilated, and the east side, which has not:

This is a close up showing the holes for MRU:

This is completely unrealted, but the Neon Museum (MONA) happens to be nearby.
Image
That's not the best of what's inside, but I chose that photo for here because it had a lot of stuff in one photo.

The museum was not limited to scavenged art, though; there was a lot of original art too.

This is the building it's in from the courtyard side - those pyramids are mosaics:

Thank you sky, I'm so glad you liked MONA. And, yes, they do need a much larger home. So much of MONA's collection isn't even on display. And some of what is on display is not fully labelled.

For example, did you spot the TransAmerica Building's giant neon "T" in the boneyard? How about the top third of the old TransAmerica building logo? They aren't labelled, but they're there.

As for the $40 photo in the gift shop, MONA gets 50% of the sale. It's for a good cause... MONA!

LOS ANGELES BUSINESS JOURNAL
June 12, 2006

"Beverly Hills Site will be developer's make-or-break test"

..."One of the company's first projects was the Transamerica Center, a 1960s skyscraper in Downtown Los Angeles that was 1.4 million square feet of nostalgia and had "been on the wrong side of Dodge for 40 years," as (David) Margulies put it. The building was less than half occupied, but New Pacific acquired it not with the idea of tearing it down - which is what some would have preferred - but with the idea of bringing it back to life. It was a tough sell. Twenty-One banks turned them down... "The market believed that no one would live in Downtown L.A.," Margulies recalled. But the company eventually secured a loan from Magic Johnson's venture fund, Canyon-Johnson Realty Advisors. And a year and a half later, the building was 98 percent occupied and helping reshape the downtown scene...

(These are the same people doing the new condo project on the Robinsons site in Beverly Hills and the article goes on about how Green that will be.)

LOS ANGELES TIMES

Face-Lifts on Downtown Skyline
Landmark AT&T Center is among the towers getting 're-skinned' as owners seek to cash in on the area's boom.
By Cara Mia DiMassa, Times Staff Writer
October 19, 2006

Maybe turning 40 was a sign. The look that once was so stylish now feels a little dated. The complexion is getting a little rough.

Is a little cosmetic surgery in order?

The owners of the 35-story AT&T Center on the southern edge of downtown Los Angeles think so. So workers are beginning to remake the landmark tower, replacing the 1960s-era square metal cladding with a cutting-edge translucent metal skin that when completed will change the look of downtown's skyline...

"But architect Andy Cohen, executive director of the architectural firm Gensler, said that the building is leaking and "the sun really creates a lot of heat gain in the building."

I bet that is true since he striped the building of its sun shades!

Thanks Nichols for the article!

I was hoping that only we in Poland are so stupid that we upgrade older modern buildings with today's styling....recently our hotel "Merkury" has been renamed to "Mercure" and had a completely new front done :( the windows were made narrower (formerly in the form of "picture window" - wider than higher), and new color tiles have been added (). It's great opportunity they have left the bold, wide roof over the entrance (not visible on the photo above)

From one side it's good they didn't realise the plans for destroying this Transamerica Center. It looks to be a rather recognizable part of the period's architecture from what everybody's posted here. Renovating it, mainly cleaning could give a great effect. Don't know if I see it right on the photos but those vertical parts that were holding sun shades seem to be made/covered with aluminum.I used to live close to the group of aluminum-covered skyscrapers and those definietly have their own charm. From what is shown on the sign on the fence, will be very unbalanced with that glass top. And the complete effect will (in my eyes) be not that up-to-date, as square blocks of windows, as the Transamerica will look when finished, were built for long time, those don't have distinctive features which immadiately allow to guess when it has been built :|
