Market Rate for using personal residence for filming/photo?

Postby bvadel » Mon May 01, 2006 9:51 am

We were approached by a production company that was interested in using our home for a shoot. Since we don't have any experience dealing with these requests, can forum members provide us with any insight into fair market rates for something like this?

I would be interested in getting feedback on typical rates for:
- location filming for commercials or movies
- basic photoshoots (for catalog work or similar)

I'm assuming the rates will vary greatly depending on the scope and nature of the project however any guidance or experience that members can share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

howdy,

it can vary greatly by amount of time, how many people are on the shoot, how long the shoot runs, what you're renting out, who's renting it, if they're using the inside & outside or not, etc.

i've only been shooting @ free places or with friend hookups (i.e. too cheap to publish). but i've worked on nationally syndicated mag shoots where we've rented a silverlake apartment for $500 for about 5-10 crew members + celebs + equipment for the day. and a very nice west-side house for $800 for the day.

i know those were both lucky (and partially friend) finds as going rate for anything through a location agency was $1000 min.

if it's a student project (unless they've got grants) forget it..
if it's a multi-million dollar commercial, you should get way more (esp. cuz there's gonna be a shitload of people there!)

decide what it's worth to you

hope this helps a bit.. if somethings not clear, write me.

high-end condition eichlers were going for 3000/3500 + back in the day for full film crew. for i think a 10/12 hour day? plus overtime rates if they went over
plus 1/2 day rate for prep and strike days.

still shoots were 1000+ depending on your home and the level of client and the number of people involved in a shoot.

don't settle for less - always negotiate for more than they offer.

never do a music video unless you want your home trashed.

porns pay decent and will come back multiple times (no pun intended) if you're willing to have them. we never did - but i have a friend who made a decent living off of porn shoot at his house.

Be very careful if you allow them into any rooms unsupervised. I had a pretty bad experience with a PBS crew I allowed to shoot in my house. They used something that looked like gaffer's tape (but was worse than gaffer's tape!) on my floors, which left a horrible sticky gooey residue. Worst of all, they shoved the furniture back against my Hunter-Douglass blinds and bent them.

Forewarned is forearmed.
