Griffith Observatory reopens this fall

Postby nichols » Thu May 25, 2006 6:24 pm

After almost five years without our beloved Griffith Observatory, Angelenos will finally be able to look to the heavens again this (Late October, Early November they won't committ) fall.

I had a little tour with some of the key people recently. Here are some photos.

Image
$93 million dollars and Just as you hoped - the iconic view remains unchanged.
Image
The Astronomers monument sat in storage as the entire south lawn was excavated for the invisible addition, now it's back where it belongs
Image
Architect Stephen Johnson designed the underground addition and Brenda Levin was the restoration architect for the 1935 building. City Parks and Rec woman in the rear.
Image
The Hugo Ballin murals are all beautifull restored.

Image
When you get used to dirty paintings, it's hard to believe they were ever so light and colorful.
Image
The old exhibit halls were restored and will now be known as the "Hall of the Sky" and the "Hall of the Eye"
Image
The director's office (and his secretary's office) both have these incredible deco zodiac chandeliers
Image
Dr. Edwin Krupp (red hat) has been the director of the observatory since 1970
Image
Brenda Levin discusses the restoration of the copper domes
Image
It is still very much a construction site. Everyone had to wear a hard hat and steel toed boots
Image
The old James Dean monument was moved from this area up to the front.
Image
99% of the new construction is underground and very punny.. This is the "Cosmic Connection" leading to the "Wormhole" which is at the base of the Leonard Nimoy "Event Horizon"
Image
This shot does not do justice to this HUGE room- which is the major part of the new exhibition space. It is dominated by the "Big Picture" - a 20'x152'foot porcelain enamel photograph of space.

Image
Dr. Krupp was very proud of the new Zeiss Universarium star projector in the planetarium. It combines slides, digital animation and all sorts of goodies in that block of cheese. They will continue to have a live host.

Brenda Levin did an incredible job on this restoration - sure to be an award winner all around.

I heard before it closed that the Laserium was not going to return because it was not "educational" in nature.

Not educational?

Smoking dope and listening to Pink Floyd is practically standard policy at institutions of higher (no pun intended) learning, nationwide, for over 30 years.

(Or did I just make their case?)

Beautifully restored, and I can't wait to re-visit this true gem
above the city.

Let's see, the Getty Villa and the Will Rogers Ranch House both
renovated and re-opened, the Hollywood Sign re-painted, the
Marion Davies Estate in Santa Monica renovation project
approved, and the Los Feliz Brown Derby saved from demolition.

Add to this list the restoration of various murals, and the re-lighting
of rooftop neon signs.

YES! Finally, some people are starting to listen about saving
the historical/ cultural symbols of Los Angeles. What's next?

If enough people start speaking out, we can save our heritage
from cash hungry developers, and elimate future "historic
sites"- the generic Tuscan-style condo buildings from dominating
every street corner.

LOS ANGELES TIMES

L.A.'s Eye on Cosmos Returns
Griffith Observatory will reopen Nov. 3 after a $93-million renovation. The price of the shuttle ride is also astronomical.
By Christopher Reynolds, Times Staff Writer
October 4, 2006

Standing before the copper-domed landmark that has perched on the Hollywood Hills since 1935, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Tuesday unveiled a restored and expanded Griffith Observatory and said it would reopen to the public Nov. 3.

The announcement follows nearly five years of closure and a $93-million restoration that more than doubled the size of a facility that observatory director Edwin Krupp likes to call "the hood ornament of Los Angeles." Yet the changes remain nearly invisible from a distance...
