Egads! If this message board had a "puke" emoticon, this would be the time to use it. Sad to see that such a glorious building--inside and out--will be replaced by yet another cookie-cutter condo tower. :rage:

Are they CRAZY! The rendering for the new development on where SF is looks terrible. That's all we need in LA, more ugly condos

I like how the tower rendering already has obnoxious ad banners plastering the sides. I have a book that includes a "futuristic city" rendering from the late 1800's, most notable is how everthing was covered with tasteless advertising; this really is where we're headed isn't it? What would it take to ban large scale, third party advertising outside of dedicated billboards?

Sunset Gower Studios Sell for $200 Million

By DANIEL MILLER
Los Angeles Business Journal Staff
Sunset Gower Studios is changing hands for just over $200 million, with commercial real estate firm Hudson Capital LLC and an unnamed capital partner picking up the historic property – which was marketed as a “redevelopment opportunity.â€￾

Headed by veteran real estate player Victor Coleman, who co-founded Arden Realty Inc., Hudson outbid a slew of other interested parties – from conventional studio operators to companies not normally associated with Hollywood – to purchase the property from owner GI Partners LLC.

Indeed, the 16-acre site, where classic and modern day productions such as “Mr. Smith Goes to Washingtonâ€￾ and “The Good Shepherdâ€￾ were filmed, is the latest studio sale as non-traditional players move into Hollywood and make their presence felt in a region where development opportunities are limited....

Sunset Gower’s suitors, according to sources, included Carlyle; real estate operating company Newport Capital Advisors, which recently bought the Hollywood Palladium for $68 million; and commercial developer and property owner Argent Ventures LLC, which paid $50 million for the Capitol Records Tower last year....

LOS ANGELES TIMES

Sale of old Columbia headquarters finalized
By Roger Vincent
August 16, 2007

The $200-million sale of one of Hollywood's most famous film lots, the former Columbia Pictures headquarters, has closed and is now in the hands of a new Los Angeles investment company.

The 15-acre lot has one of the richest histories in the entertainment industry, dating to a tiny studio that tycoon Harry Cohn bought in 1920 on Sunset Boulevard between Gower Street and Beachwood Drive.

Investment firm Hudson Capital bought Sunset-Gower Studios from GI Partners, a Menlo Park-based private equity firm, as first reported in June.

Hudson Capital will invest in further improvements to the site, managing partner Victor Coleman said, though he declined to say how much they would cost. "We are going to upgrade amenities such as the commissary, production facilities and offices,"...

Oh, here's the LA Times article from Sunday.

The famed dance hall and concert venue has kept up with changing tastes to stay viable. Now, it's closing temporarily for renovations.

By Cecilia Rasmussen, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
October 7, 2007

During the most glamorous of Hollywood's several "Golden Ages," the Hollywood Palladium on Sunset Boulevard more than held its own against flashier and more expensive nightclubs.

In the 1940s, the Palladium's dance floor drew stars such as Rita Hayworth and Tyrone Power, and the stars drew tourists as well as working folks, who saved up for the $1 cover charge and a $3 dinner.

During nearly seven decades, the Palladium also attracted powerhouse performers whose musical styles reflected changing tastes, from Frank Sinatra to the Rolling Stones.

And it outlasted most of the other vast ballrooms, including Aragon at Ocean Park and La Monica on the Santa Monica Pier.

Now, as the long-closed Cocoanut Grove at the former Ambassador Hotel gives way to a school and the Earl Carroll Theatre serves as a filming site for children's television shows, the 67-year-old Streamline Moderne-style Palladium is poised to undergo a massive, yearlong renovation.

Plans are to reopen it under the same name and with the same mission -- a storied venue for music and dancing....

The renovation has begun. The 1961 Lawrence Welk facade has been removed and the 1940 look has begun to emerge. Best of luck to these folks. 2008 photos by Ted Otis.

JAY-Z TO HEADLINE GRAND REOPENING OF
NEWLY RENOVATED HOLLYWOOD PALLADIUM
ON OCTOBER 15TH

Live Nation (NYSE: LYV) announced today that Grammy award winning international superstar JAY-Z will christen the newly renovated, world famous Hollywood Palladium, with an intimate performance on Wednesday, October 15th.  Reminiscent of Frank Sinatra, who was the first performer on the legendary stage in 1940, JAY-Z, with an incredible 12-piece band backing him, will be the first artist to play the venue which has undergone a year-long, top-to-bottom renovation, bringing the iconic music venue back to its original grandeur...

Built expressly for the purpose of showcasing live music, The Hollywood Palladium opened its doors on September 23, 1940 with a concert by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra featuring the soon to be famous Frank Sinatra.  In those days, the Palladium was the place to be seen for celebrities and wildly popular with local music and dance fans as well.

"I'm honored to play such an iconic venue.  Just as Frank ushered in a golden era, I hope this opening will mark the beginning of a resurgence in generation defining live music," stated JAY-Z.

The venue is receiving a total renovation of all interior and exterior areas including a new dance floor, a new façade that emulates the building’s original architecture, expanded concessions, upgraded restrooms, improved interior lighting, as well as brand new paint and carpeting, all of which are congruent with the venue’s original look.  In addition, major upgrades have been made to the stage infrastructure which will enable the venue to accommodate larger, modern productions.  Sound experts are revamping the acoustic treatments on the inside of the venue, which is expected to give music fans the best concert experience possible.

In 1961 the venue became a television studio and over the years has served as the location for such award shows as the Emmy Awards, The Grammy Awards, The NAACP Awards and Country Music Awards.  Eventually the venue returned to its musical roots, hosting many of the biggest names in rock and roll throughout the decades, including everyone from The Rolling Stones, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, The Who and Rod Stewart to The Police, The Replacements, The Clash, Public Enemy, Metallica, Jane’s Addiction, The Pixies, Beastie Boys, No Doubt and Red Hot Chili Peppers, just to name a few.  Now, in 2008, JAY-Z ushers in a new generation of today’s top artists making Hollywood’s old jewel a brand new gem.

The Sinatra comparisons are just kinda funny...

"Grammy award winning international superstar JAY-Z instantly sold out his inaugural performance at the world famous Hollywood Palladium this past Friday. Set to christen the newly renovated landmark with an intimate performance on October 15th, JAY-Z sold out just minutes after tickets went on sale. Reminiscent of Frank Sinatra, who was the first performer on the legendary stage in 1940, JAY-Z, with an incredible 12-piece band backing him, will be the first artist to play the venue which has undergone a year-long, top-to-bottom renovation, bringing the iconic music venue back to its original grandeur. Gorgeous! I completely approve and can't wait to see what the inside looks like. I've got my fingers crossed for more of that sensitive redesign the architects used on the facade.
