Ya know
When they talk about this, it's really nothing new, watching Huell Howser's show about the Calif. missions you realize a lot them had been reconstructed several times, some have even moved to other locations I think.
But I'll be by when they open.
Now if they could only reopen Mearle's in Visalia.

Bob really shouldn't be eating that giant burger before he starts spinning. Not good, Dizzy Bob, not good!
Interesting reading some of the commentary on the other sites bemoaning Bob's "mark" on the building. It seems fair to say that were it not for Bob's, the rebuilding may well not have been happening at all. I'm willing to "settle" for the slightly not-quite-original version, over nothing. Sure it won't be a perfect match, but I think all parties involved in the reconstruction have made the best of a terrible situation.
I'll be there when they open too. Can't wait to get some shots of the new neon.

i agree so much. sure, mel's took over ben franks on sunset and kerry's coffee shop on ventura in sherman oaks - not a huge fan of their 'style,' but at least the building essence are still there and still being used for the same function. that is a realistic preservation win and better then demolition.
three cheers for dizzy bob!

I'm gonna keep on the run... I'm gonna have me some fun if it costs me my very last dime.

I am first in line to say Bravo! to Bob's and Jim Louder. A big hooray. However, this is a case (unlike Ben Frank's or Kerry's) where the preservation community has had a voice in the reconstruction. There was a consulting restoration architect, former ModCom chair Adriene Biondo has been in constant consultation with the owner and it's a designated state monument (eligible for Cal Register) SO, having said all that, I've been encouraging attention to detail, because this is the ONE chance we've had to get it 100% correct.

Great photos; things look a lot further along based on the interior shots.
The place is going to be incredible, and it'll do very, very well. Thanks to you, Adriene, everyone else from ModCom and the City of Downey, we have a textbook example of how things are supposed to turn out.
I spoke to a number of people who, when they saw the fenced-in pile of destruction over two years ago, thought the only sane approach was to simply complete the demo and clean-up the site. That would have been far too easy; what we're seeing today is what's actually right.

LONG BEACH PRESS TELEGRAM
Downey landmark Johnie's Broiler to be reborn as Big Boy
By John Canalis, Staff Writer
Posted: 09/15/2009 06:08:30 PM PDT
DOWNEY - The illegal demolition of Johnie's Broiler on the first days of 2007 drew a record number of protesters to City Hall.
"We like our burgers in Downey," City Manager Gerald Caton said of a city that can back up that claim as home of the world's oldest McDonald's.
Constituents' enthusiasm for ground patties served with a side of mid-century nostalgia, brought the City Council and city management to a Tuesday walk-through of what will soon reopen as a Bob's Big Boy on Firestone Boulevard near Old River School Road.
This is no Johnie's-come-lately. Built from the original 1958 plans of Harvey's Broiler..
