Thanks for posting -- that is one cool chair. Can you tell us anything more about them? Who designed it; are they comfortable or tippy; why these are no longer in the restaurant (replaced with reproductions or another design)? I've never made it to Encounter, though it's on my lifetime checkoff list ...

I thought they were comfortable. I understand they were replaced with something off the shelf rather than reupholstered in the recent interior retrofit. They were custom made as part of the 1990s Eddie Soto Encounter redesign.

ARGONAUT

Contract approved for Theme Building

Year-long construction starts in August. Reconstruction of the exterior of the landmark Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is scheduled to begin later this summer...The contract calls for reconstruction of all four arch facades to match the historic shape and texture of the futuristic structure, airport officials said. The central core walls and the perimeter screen wall will be seismically strengthened, the parapet walls will be reconstructed, and mechanical ventilation will be installed inside the four arches. Plans also include re-coating of the building and arches, installation of a seismic damping system, new arch bracing, and strengthening of the basement and first floor concrete shear walls to improve seismic resistance.

I checked in with the Office of Historic Preservation and received the following good news:

Yes - our Office and the Commission has reviewed the Theme Building plans and I have reviewed the on-site conditions. Millard Lee of Gin Wong is the project architect who is quite responsible.
