A fine choice, Nichols. Are these catagorical funds? The Fort Moore Memorial would be a splendid spot to drop a few bucks. It sinks the spirits to pass that awesome waterfall fountain and see it perpetually bone dry. The graffiti and general state of decay adds to the feeling this sector of the city is lost to transmigrants and vandals. It does appear to get a "once over" by a maintenance crew on occasion. When did Fr. Moore last run water in LA's own, Vernal Falls? Go up and study the wall reliefs, they speak of a great metropolis coming out of an arid land and there beside is the abundant display of water which altered this landscape for better or worse.

I was a student worker in 1972 at the LA Board of Education facility ( razed ) on the hill where the falls originated from. The upper waterfall was a cool place to eat a sack lunch and look out over the city through the smog. I'm 99% sure water was running then but will stand corrected if anyone knows to the contrary.

Multiple Choice.....

The fountain was shut off because:

(A) The pumping mechanisms became out moded and difficult to repair.

(B) The mid- 1970's energy crisis forced the city/county to cut power for such discretionary uses.

(C) Commemorating a battle with Mexico is embarrassing to Los Angeles.

(D) Water shortage.

If the Ft. Moore Memorial is asking too much, how about restoring the Los Angeles County mosaic fountain at the LA Hall of Records a few block down? I did jury duty recently at Criminal Courts and Young's masterpiece is crumbling and waterless. Perhaps a statement on Southern Calif. now that I think of it.

Marxist Philosophy: "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend; inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."
