Things to do in-around Des Moines??

Postby Slim and Gabby » Wed Jun 24, 2009 9:22 am

Anybody know of swell stuff to do in or around Des Moines, IA? Slim and I are going there in August to gather family stories from the old folks and to attend the world famous Iowa State Fair.

I've ALWAYS wanted to go to the Fair (4-H fair nerd that I was) and see the .....butter cow.

It's also where the wicked fad for deep-frying everything under creation started-you know, deep fried pickles, twinkies, etc.

Has anyone got a bead on other neat MCM stuff around the area?

We'll also go visit my old haunts in Wisconsin around Old Mul-hockey. Know exactly where to find the weird stuff there. Just hoping we can go on the big flea market weekend. And that the Drive-Through Badger is still there. Gotta be some weirdness lurking along the way in the Dells, fer sure.

Any tips?

The Upper Midwest has more than its share of roadside oddities and sites of interest! In the words of a park ranger who guided us through the tunnels of Wind Cave National Park, SD years ago: "A thousand other people may already have been here; visited this spot many times. But if you have never been here before in your life...then for you it is a new discovery."

By the way, an absolutely beautiful drive into La Crosse, Wisconsin from Iowa/Minnesota is through the scenic burg of Lanesboro, MN. in the southeast corner of the state. http://www.lanesboro.com/index.php

Thanks....
Arnold Park was new to me. That looks pretty cool. And some of the towns...Lanesboro? Hadn't heard of that one.
Yep, House on the Rock is definitely an experience, as are the grotto and spam.
Still not sure how much time we'll have with each set of folks, so looking for do-by-self options. I am the rare Californian who loooves midwest madness, you betcha. This is good stuff, thanks!
