Palm Springs Day Trip

I'm planning a day trip to Palm Springs on Veteran's Day. Please suggest some things to do and see. Also, a place for a good lunch.

grab a map at the visitors center from the palm springs modcom and take a self-guided tour to dozens of classic modernist homes and buildings.
then, go south on palm canyon til you get to the cut off for south palm canyon. just before that intersection, on your left, is the best restaurant in palm springs: el mirasol. sorry if you don't like mexican food, then i can't help you!

Sightseeing: absolutely get the Palm Springs Modern Committee Modernism Map from the PS tourism people.

Eating:
My favorite is family style Italian restaurant Banducci's towards the south end of town on Palm Canyon - go on the weekend evenings for singalongs!
Also at the Palm Canyon curve near Caliente Tropics... Lyon's English Grille also with lounge entertainment
If you're vegetarian inclined - there's no place like Native Foods in the Smoke Tree Center (closed Sunday)

Sleeping:
William Cody's San Marino http://www.palmsprings.com/sanmarino/
Caliente Tropics - home to all things tiki! http://www.calientetropics.com
and check out this list http://www.palmsprings.com/hotels/retro/index.html

More on places to stay here from our old message board: http://www.lottaliving.com/oldBB/thread ... 3&f=000578

places i haven't been to, but were recommended from the Tiki Central board:
Toucan’s – A Tiki Lounge (North Palm Canyon and Via Escuela)
the Rock Garden restaurant - a senior lounge singer performs friday and maybe saturday nights

MM, speaking of the old board, I know that we have access to it but, is there still a search feature?

Unfortunately, the hosts of our old board went away into vaporland... Thankfully, I got all our posts archived before it went, but the only way you can view it is to browse the pages. http://www.lottaliving.com/oldBB/topics.php?p=1

Actually, there was no real search feature on the old board - but now we have it here for the new one!!!

ooo i thought of another thing to do... look past the horrible redesign of the 1959? William Cody? designed Palm Springs Spa Hotel facade and visit the outside spas - last time i went there, they still had the original feeling. it seems that the only thing left of the mineral baths inside was the tiled tubs? but what a wonderful way to spend a few hours - at the actual springs the town grew up around... i think that with any purchased treatment - you get full use of the individual baths and other facilities

I'm interested in any information that anyone may have on a house that caught my eye on my recent day trip to Palm Springs. It's not on the psmodcom's map but, it's on the left hand side right before you get to # 10, (Edris House by E. Stewart Williams) on their map, on W. Cielo Drive. It's a 2 story post and beam (appeared to be metal beams) with it's tongue and groove ceiling continuing out to the exterior. Quite stunning.

JB: have you seen the book "Palm Springs Weekend?" Lot's of good stuff about the buildings, houses, and architects of the area. It's on M-M's list of must reads...

Joe, thanks as always. I'll probably pick that book up as well as Palm Springs Modern prior to attending psmodcom's tour on January 18, 2003.

TM, thank you. Do you know if that house was ever published and if so where?

TM, you were right. There's a lousy night time picture of the house on page 13 in Palm Springs Weekend.

That there was a post on where the Alexander homes were located in Palm Springs and the reply had the locations/tract names-can't seem to locate it.

Hmmm... trying to remember. Las Palmas is on the NW side of town... west of N. Palm Canyon... I can't remember the cross street. There's also Twin Palms, in the south end of town... essentially across E. Palm Canyon from where the Biltmore used to be.
