Hello!

You might want to pick up this book: BUILDINGS OF IOWA
by David Gebhard & Gerald Mansheim (1993), published by the Society of Architectural Historians.

I get to spend a week in Iowa, June 30-July 6

gunna be frigg'n bored out of my skull, so thanks for the info.

(no offense Luke Trash, but I will be with my wife's grand parents most of the time. I will have a day to make it up to Ames, though).

Well, I was summoned from the depths :)

I've been kinda busy lately with work, and applying for a new job recently.

Anyway, my favorite Antique stores in Des Moines are the Brass Armadillo and the Majestic Lion. Both are near each other on I-80 as you're heading out of Des Moines to the east. In Old Valley Junction, there's an antique type store called the Atomic Garage. A lot of Haywood Wakefield furniture stashed in the attic. The owner is a hoarder.

That's a good term for it. Hibernation.

Now that spring is rolling around, it's amazing how much more I've been getting done.

I can entertain folks, but we make no guarantee at Casa del Luke that the tour guide will be knowledgable on any topics, or cover any interesting material!

And by the way, if you all discover stuff in Iowa to see, post it up here :) I'm sort of a hermit, so I don't know much about the architectural stand-outs of the state.

One that stands out is the Princess Cafe

It's pretty original to it's 1935 style as far as art deco goes. I love the private laquered booths inside. The food is good too. It's located in Iowa Falls, IA (which isn't really NEAR anything important.)

All of the hipsters in IOwa City rave about The Lincoln Cafe

located in scenic Mt. Vernon, Iowa.

It's a cafe on the lincoln highway, but they serve upscale ($$) food I have heard.

I was through this town on my motorcycle last weekend, and it is pretty.

Then there is my favorite (since it's closer to me), Nilands Cafe:

I'm not so much mid-century modern as I am roadside america. So your tastes may vary ;)

Nope, not jail.. Just winter. Also, I've sort of fallen into obsession with photography, and have been spending a lot of internet time studying it. The problem with message boards is that there are so many of them. I think I'm a member of at least 30, so I get sidetracked occasionally.

Long ago, a couple of LL members had contacted me about getting some chairs, but that fell through because I forgot to check my messages/mail. The chairs have gone on to other homes too, so if you missed out, I'm sorry. However, they weren't worth shipping.

So, for the time being I'm back and trying to catch up.

Iowa Road Trip!

Postby Glen Leslie » Fri May 19, 2006 2:29 am

Hi all,

I was going to try and describe my road trip to Iowa, but to be honest I think the LPs I picked up tell the story best! See my other post at

http://www.lottaliving.com/bb/viewtopic ... 6870#36870

to listen in to the Iowa Road Trip Show!

Once I figure out this "posting pictures" thing I'll add some photos of the trip to this post. We had a great trip!
