SO much great MCM church architecture...

I really can't say which denomination seems to take the lead. Lots of great Unitarian stuff, some really cool synagogues, and the Catholics are no slouches either....

Here's one from my youth that still is kept up nice today: St. John the Baptist in Napa, CA:
the exterior:

and the interior (check out the great beams and nice stained glass):

St. Mary's Cathedral in SF is pretty great (widely referred to as the washing machine agitator...):

It's the interior that is so swell. The stained glass inserts on each of the four 'wings' of the agitator represent the four elements-earth, water, air, fire. They are really swell, as are the acoustics and this beautiful mobile over the altar....

the supports for the building are inside and very dramatic:

There is an amazing stretch of wild churches in San Francisco on Brotherhood Way. I have always loved this Bufano scupture on the hillside across from all the churches:

apparently rejected by World's Fair and SFO...why? It's so cool...

It's right across the street from THIS wild Greek Orthodox church...

I guess I should stop now....there are sooo many great ones out there!
Pen-gu-ins is pracatically chickinz, and I hates to see chickinz cry so much, I has to put’em outta ther mizzery!

Went on the Oklahoma Modernism tour this weekend, and while I knew Murray Jones Murray had done the St. Patrick's Catholic church I had never been and man was I blown away. Easily one of the top 10 buildings I have ever been too. Hardly gets the respect it deserves.

St. Patrick's Catholic Church 1962
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Murray Jones Murray with Felix Candela - architects

Upon its completion it was selected as the top piece of religious architecture in the country in 1961.

The church is a church within a church. the exterior wall is tilt up concrete slab that encloses a glass sanctuary with a cantilevered thin-shell concrete umbrella vault roof. The concrete slabs feature 50 three story angels that are deeply incised on the interior of the concrete slabs.

The altar screen was designed by Josef Albers.

the kicker is that the church was built by the parishonors themselves.

the form cast angels and the resulting exterior/interior space.
