LA'S best Chinese restaurant ANYWHERE in LA?

Postby ChrisLAXEncounter » Mon Sep 04, 2006 11:16 pm

I normally go to Hop Louie or the Golden Dragon, but I was hoping for better.

There used to be another, inside the Archway, which is now closed and appears to be a retail shop, although it has been closed all of the times I've been there at night. Also, it used to be an excellent nightclub in the late 80s.

I'm looking to re-experience the brillance.

The Chinese restaurant which is now the IHop which ModCom frequents had a marvelous interior.

The Chinese restaurant outside of the Universal Hilton was also incredible. Any insight as to why it closed and whether it will re-open?

The IHOP was formerly the Shanghai Winter Garden and yes, it did have a fantastic interior. Madame Wu's Garden in West LA probably had the best Chinese modern design-period, but was demolished in about 2001. Golden Pagoda/Hop Louie is definitely the best preserved period interior, however I also like Ye Loy in Temple City, and Ming's in Bellflower, though I fear they may have lost that outrageous orange and turquoise interior. There is also an incredible little jewel of a take out only place of Foothill up near Tujunga that's really terrific.

We're in a sorry state when it comes to well-preserved midcentury Chinese restaurants... BUT we have an embarassment of riches if you are looking for food. Chinese food in Los Angeles has become more and more authentic over the decades until some say it's the best outside China. This book explains it all.

Grand Star was pretty great, but I think they may have messed up the interior...haven't been there in a while. More Modern than Chinese, though.

Grand Star Restaurant
943 Sun Mun Way
Los Angeles, CA 90012
(213) 626-2285

and of course, a great 1990s version of the classic interior can be found at the Good Luck Bar.

and to a lesser degree, at this place -
FORBIDDEN CITY - 1718 N.VINE STREET - HOLLYWOOD

As with tiki, the best aesthetics and the best food are two vastly different and mostly opposing destinations.

Common wisdom is that the best Chinese food in the west resides in the 626. Walked by Gourmet 88 this weekend and it reminded me of a Nagel nail salon...but the food smelled terrific.

Chris-- I strongly recommend Yujean Kang's in Pasadena (or West Hollywood). In my experience, it is the best Chinese restaurant in Los Angeles (and beyond).

When the restaurant first opened, more than 15 years ago, Gourmet Magazine named it as one of the 10 best new restaurants in the United States. Also Gourmet named its chef, Yujean Kang, as one of the best new chefs in the U.S. Since then, it's been on Los Angeles Magazine's Top 50 list, and they named it as one of Southern CA's best restaurants a few years ago; it also has the highest rating in the Zagat Guide, etc.

The menu definitely has some east-west fusion going on, so it may not be right, if you are looking for a more traditional Chinese restaurant... but it's not weird-fusion-- very elegant, very sophisticated menu.

I think Yang Chow (downtown) can't be beat for food. It's not snazzy in terms of decor though.

not so over the top decor-wise.... there is an old press tim looking ceiling that may have been gold long ago - but they painted it white. so alas.

but the best vegetarian chinese is Vegetable Delight out in Granada Hills.

at every chinese vegetarian restaurant we go to for the first time, we always order sweet and sour pork to see who come closest to the real pork versions we grew up on as kids.

hands down, from NYC to SF chinatowns, alhambra and beyond, no one has ever been better then our buddhist friends up in granada hills.

17823 chatsworth st near the corner of zelzah.
wow - they even have a website now!
