Thanks for posting this :-) There's another old dealership on the 99 just before it turns into 7th...

And one of these days I'll take a pic of the wonderful signage that includes Reddy Kilowatt on the 99!!! At the utility co-op building :-)

Interesting building! Thanks for postingit.

Not sure if I agree that it is "googie", more like nautical moderne to me. Too bad they plywooded over the lower parts of the glass.

the whole area is slated for redevelopment. stopping the UO juggernaught will be quite difficult

Tony, it only look nautical because plywood replaced the glass on the ground level due to vandalism. It's definitely googie.

AJ, the new arena has nothing to do with this site. The arena will be built at Williams Bakery. UO does intend to redevelop the site at some point, though.

Hey all,

For those interested in Googie architecture and history, I have added additional information to my webpage on this structure; the former Joe Romania auto showroom.

I have corresponded with the original architect of the showroom, Mr. Grant Seder. He has provided some background on the showroom's origins.

Also, I have located the original newspaper article from 1960 describing the Chevrolet dealership's grand opening. I have received permission from the local newspaper to reprint the article and photographs.

All this may be found at:

Hi AJ,

Nice site! Keep up the good work. I think I now agree that the original building was Googie. It's just that the present state makes me think Nautical Moderne. But boy, was that great in its original intention!
