July 13 - October 12, 2008
Between Earth and Heaven: The Architecture of John Lautner
About the Exhibition
Between Earth and Heaven will be the first large-scale museum exhibition devoted to this innovative, yet underappreciated, American architect. Over the course of a career spent largely in Los Angeles, John Lautner (1911–1994) captured the essence of Southern California in more than 150 distinctive structures. Trained by Frank Lloyd Wright, Lautner is best known for such private homes as the Elrod Residence in Palm Springs, featured in the James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever, and Los Angeles’s iconic “Chemosphere.â€￾ Organized by the Hammer Museum, Between Earth and Heaven is curated jointly by Nicholas Olsberg, a cultural historian and expert on modern American architecture, and Frank Escher, an award-winning architect who helped establish the John Lautner Foundation. A three-venue international tour is planned. The 234-page Rizzoli exhibition catalogue will be the first comprehensive study of Lautner and his work and will include many previously unpublished photographs and drawings.

DOCENTS NEEDED

CALL FOR DOCENTS FOR LAUTNER HOUSE TOURS

The Hammer Museum and MAK Center for Art and Architecture are collaborating on a series of John Lautner house tours, organized on the occasion of the Hammer's summer retrospective exhibition, Between Earth and Heaven: The Architecture of John Lautner. John Lautner designed some of Los Angeles' most remarkable homes, from spectacular bachelor pads to single-family gems.

We are looking for volunteers to serve as docents (the MAK Center is coordinating all training) in the homes and in exchange for your time, you will have the opportunity of seeing the interior of exquisite LA Modernist masterworks. These tours will be ticketed and tickets will cost $140 (to purchase, you must be a Hammer member at the Contributor level or above) so this is a great way to see some Lautner homes for free.
We are still in the planning stages, but have confirmed tour dates of Sunday, July 27 and Sunday, September 14, with the possibility of additional dates as we determine the featured homes. Complete details including ticket sales will be available by mid-June.
We hope you'll consider volunteering for one or more of the tour dates since each will feature different Lautner structures. MAK Center is gathering a list of interested volunteers so if you are available, please contact Ami Brett at 323-651-1510 or abrett @ makcenter.org by Friday, June 6.

Please feel free to forward this on to colleagues and friends you think will make dependable volunteers as well.
We hope to see you at the Lautner tours this year!

LOS ANGELES TIMES

Between Earth and Heaven: The Architecture of John Lautner' seeks to save the 'Chemosphere' architect from stereotypes.
By Christopher Hawthorne, Times Architecture Critic
July 14, 2008
If there is a single big idea driving "Between Earth and Heaven: The Architecture of John Lautner," which opened Sunday at the Hammer Museum, it's that Lautner needs to be rescued from his own hardened reputation. Most museum retrospectives begin with an effort to dust off or polish up the historical record. This one, at times, feels like a full-on rehabilitation campaign...

LOS ANGELES TIMES

ARCHITECTURE
John Lautner's ground-breaking style

The late designer created spaces that were informal observatories of the world around them. Often misunderstood by critics, his works are the focus of an exhibit at UCLA's Hammer Museum.
By Anne-Marie O'Connor, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
July 13, 2008
FEW GRASPED how John Lautner used architecture to embrace the natural world.

He opened a Sunset Boulevard diner to the sky and was dismayed to see it become a symbol of "Googie" Atomic Age design. His flying saucer-shaped Chemosphere residence, conceived to immerse residents in sweeping mountain and city views, became emblematic of the bachelor-pad Hollywood Modernism he rejected. Movies sensationalized his creations as James Bond-style backdrops for sex machines and lethally bored rich kids...

I don't think this exhibit was entirely successful. For one thing, the images recreating the views outside of the houses are so faint that they can barely be seen through the models. There is an over-reliance on architectural drawings that convey very little information about what he was visualizing. I also wasn't impressed with the videos of the various houses that they were projecting onto the walls -- they lack a sense of how the houses fit into their environments.

Check out my Chemosphere Paperweight at www.buildingclassics.com. A fun hobby crafting this on the famous design. It finally showed me how people get into the house!
