Mid-Century Modern lecture

Thursday, May 28
6:30 p.m.
DeBoest Lecture Hall, Indianapolis Museum of Art

Elizabeth Smith’s illustrated lecture, “Case Study Houses: Blueprint for Modern Living,” highlights famed experiments in residential architecture sponsored by Art & Architecture magazine from 1945-1966. Major architects—Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, and others—designed the inexpensive and efficient model homes, most built in southern California.

Since 1999, Smith has served as Chief Curator at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. From 1983 to 1999, she was curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

The Mid-Century Modern lecture is co-sponsored by Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana’s Landmarks of the Recent Past Committee and the Design Arts Society of the IMA.

(The Mid-Century Modern lecture precedes Historic Landmarks Foundation’s second Back to the Future Tour of mid-century modern homes. This year’s tour, May 30 in West Lafayette, features five architect-designed houses built between 1955 and 1964.)
