Come get your civic duty on and stroll with us this weekend!

Jane’s Walk Los Angeles: MacArthur Park Roundabout
Saturday, May 1 Sunday, May 2
2:00pm – 3:30pm

Founded in memory of Jane Jacobs, author of the seminal Death Life of Great American Cities,
Jane’s Walk is an international event honoring her advocacy for walkable streets and livable cities
that work on a human scale and build community. Oriented in one of Los Angeles’
most promising historic neighborhoods, Smart Gals’ Jane’s Walk USA/Los Angeles
will begin at the MacArthur Park Red Line station ( Stepping out onto busy
Alvarado Avenue,we will traverse the park, taking in its modest monuments along the way.
Though our walks will have a different focus each day, both originate at the
MacArthur Park Red Line station and end at Mama’s Hot Tamales,
a non-profit that’s been instrumental in the revitalization of Mac Arthur Park,
run by the Institute for Urban Renewal and Development (IURD).

On Saturday, we will get a tour of the landmark Park Plaza Hotel, designed by Curlett and Beelam (1925).
Exploring the Park Plaza will shed light on the neighborhood’s once glamorous roots and serve to
contextualize new construction, currently in the design phase, such as a forthcoming affordable housing
building by Santa Monica based Koning Eizenberg Architecture. On Sunday, we will focus on the exterior
of the Park Plaza, and devote more time to proposed developments in the area.

The walks will wrap up at Mama’s Hot Tamales, where pedestrian’s may order freshly made tamales,
enjoy locally roasted, organic coffee and learn more about the IURD’s role in Los Angeles’ cultural growth.
