neutra aluminum fence

Postby lasquirrel » Thu Aug 02, 2007 7:38 pm

Hi all, we are looking at fence design and recently ran across an old Architectural Digest that had a Neutra aluminum fence. What are your thoughts on this...

not sure what fence you are talking about. photos are helpful. Neutra often used silver paint on wood to look like metal.

And I believe the "joke" was directed to Pierre Koning who was sitting at the next drafting table.

And there is also that great line of Josef von Sternberg, commanding Neutra to remove the locks from the bathroom doors because "there is always somebody in the bathroom threatening to commit suicide and blackmailing you, unless you can get in."

Well if the house lasquirrel has in an old Architectural Digest is the Von Sternberg house, then I want to see it. I know there was a spread, as I have a page torn out of it. (not torn out by me) There is a picture of the Living room with the big split leaf philodendrons hanging down. That house was a knock out. I'm sure the pictures were from the time Ayn Rand owned it.

Now back to the metal fencing. Neutra often used materials from industrial catalogues. I know that when they were redoing the Kaufman house in Palm Springs, they were able to find the metal louvers made by the original manufacturer. And such metals are still used in commercial work. So we just need an architect to help identify what it is. then calls could be made. What about those companies that sell prefab metal buildings?

You are welcome to see the magazine anytime. I LOVE that fence. We're hiring an architect to help us decide on fencing. One would think that it would be low maintenance.???

The photos of the von Sternberg house with the philodendren leaves are from the time Ayn Rand lived there. I'd love to find out the issue of Architectural Digest it was in, they're not dated, but you should see Roman Numerals and numbers for the volume and number... When Ayn Rand had the house, it was full of Gilbert Rohde furniture, which I collect.

I'm sure when von Sterberg said "there is always somebody in the bathroom threatening to commit suicide and blackmailing you, unless you can get in" he must have been talking about Marlene Dietrich...
