Late 60's Modern Renovation

Postby ripley » Sat Jul 12, 2008 7:51 am

Here are some pix of the renovations to the new place. We are restoring all of the teak, and using a Trend Q terrazzo tile in the public areas. Any ideas are appreciated.

Trend Q makes a green terrazzo tile in a variety of sizes. We are using a very large tile for the house. I've never been a grout fan....

Is this a Jack Simison design?

Yes, a 1968 Jack Simison. Recently, a Simison was on the La Canada, CA house tour. We are not altering the original design or layout. Just updating systems and some surface materials. Trend Q Tile and Plynyl instead of Carpet , Heath Tiles in the baths, White solid surface countertops. It was actually quite a research project to find appliances to fit a 1968 kitchen without removing the teak. Our biggest challenge is late 60s hardware. I have posted before on that.

WOW!
What a beauty.

I have a similar issue with my teak kitchen. Appliance replacement has
been a challenge. I did have to remove one small upper cabinet. But
re-hung it over the washer/dryer.
And i fear the OPO's housekeeper used some type of 'liquid gold'
silicone spray on the cabinets.
Another issue you have is the artwork leaving ghost fading on the walls.
You are way ahead of me in restoration and research!
Let us know what you find out and what solutions you come up with.
I have managed to blend in nail holes and faded areas by mixing my
own stain and filler to match the vintage patina.

Beautiful house. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the kind words about the house. We certainly feel lucky to have it. We are refinishing all the teak to the former darker color that was under the artwork all those years. As far as appliances.. mostly Miele (feels very modern-clean)and a Kitchen Aid frig. We had such headaches finding one that would open fully. The biggest challenge was the vent. We ended up with a Miele retractable fan and sadly had to forgo the use of two cabinets.

Wow! Just a beautiful home, and I can see you are really going out of your way to do a sensitive remodel.

That teak is well worth the extra trouble. Good for you!
Can't wait to see more....

Man that is one beautiful home. You should thank your lucky stars every night that you have the opportunity to own a place like that. In fact, we all should, huh?

Whatever, I love the look of that place...one of my favorites that I have seen so far. I think after looking at straight beam after straight beam something just clicked. And I love the fireplace.

I hope you keep the pics coming, I for one love to see the progress reports from everyone...

Wow. If I had any suggestions, I'd be too speechless to offer them. What an utterly breathtaking place! I feel a little guilty now, like I've been looking at house porn. :)

Is that slate tile in the foyer, and are you keeping that or going with the terrazzo tile there as well?

Again, thanks for all the incredibly positive feedback. The original tile in the foyer was a sort of Spanish-y brown tile that I have seen in a couple of the later Buff houses. We are going to do the terrazzo tile in the foyer downstairs and Plynyl down the hall to and including the office and guest room.

Beams

Postby ripley » Tue Jul 15, 2008 8:19 am

Hi Jesgord -
Beams are solid teak. I was told by the daughter of the owner that it took over a year to create the curvature in the wood beams in the house - much like a shipbuilding process.

Here are some progress pictures, taken today, of our 1968 Jack Simison. We started in mid April, have completed all of the un-sexy systems updates--tankless water heaters and the like. The pool and spa have been retiled but we have clearly not touched the landscaping anywhere. The teak restoration is well underway as well as exterior and some interior paint. Cabinetry is being built and the piles of boxes you see are tile, tile tile. I am hoping to see countertops and terrazzo before long.

Wow, stunning house. You sure seem to have a good sense of what to do. Thanks for sharing the progress. I'd love to know what the tile is that you are using, whatever details you can give?

Thanks

Looking good! The richness of the teak is stupendous! What will you use for countertops in the kitchen? In my mind, for some reason, I'm picturing limestone. that said, you seem to have a GREAT grasp of what materials will look good in your spectacular home!

Hey Jesgord and Kraftdee!
So here goes the gory details for you... Ceasarstone in Blizzard for the kitchen, master bath, kitchen office. Caesarstone in Lagos Blue for the additional baths and bar-- it will be atop a white enamel Poliform-esque cabinetry in the baths. Heath tile for the kitchen and bar backsplashes in a light blue, the same Heath tile but different sizes and 60s pop colors in 3 baths and finally a vibrant wallpaper in the powder room. As far as flooring, A white terrazzo tile with copper flecks for the main living areas and entry, limestone in the master bath, wool carpet in the bedroom and a bamboo plynyl downstairs.
