Kitchen Remodel...

Postby rogue » Thu Aug 07, 2008 10:53 am

I realize my tastes may not fit the mold of what most purists may consider proper for the home, but I ask you to think outside the box and give me some advice on redoing this kitchen. To get an idea of the style of the home and the look I'm going for...
Image

I'm scared of digging into this project without the advice of those with MCM's and those that have done projects like this, so I appreciate any and all input, negative or positive.

All gas lines, water lines, and ventilation are easily accessible from under the house so reworking lines is no issue.

The home used to have a wall that separated the kitchen/dining area from the living area, but it was removed and the fireplace in the ceiling still remains. I am not opposed to adding a hanging fireplace later on, in fact I would love one; but I'm not sure it works with the current floor plan.

Anyways, I'm looking to either change the layout of the kitchen entirely and place it on the entire back wall at the garage with a huge island/bar, or leave the original layout, which I'm not overly sold on. The original layout was planned with the original plans, and seeing how the plans have changed, I think its open season,

Ultimately I'd like a bar area for friends to hang out at, and a booth type dining table/seating, on rollers for formal dining.

On with the cheesy 70s porno kitchen pix. The last time the kitchen was redone was 1972...

I still like the cabinets, but think the tile must go. We discussed this here:

http://www.lottaliving.com/bb/viewtopic ... ght=#51073

when you first bought the place. Changing that and getting some new appliances would be a transformation. And not very expensive. However, I do kind of like the all along the back (side?) wall idea. With an island. Very clean and simple. That of course would cost twice (three times?) as much. I'm not sure about a booth. It just does not "go" with that house. You might have a look at the kitchen in this real estate listing posted here:

http://www.lottaliving.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=12552

I asked and got an answer to my "how much did that cost" question in a private message. I can tell you that it was not all that expensive. Might be worth giving them a call. They have a shop that makes modern cabinetry.
And they are certainly qualified to give advise.

I also remember a kitchen set up like you contemplate in an old issue of Dwell. If I can find it, I'll post the page number. You do take dwell? Have any old issue around?

I'm thinking a total reconfiguration is the way to go. The first few things that strike me are as follows:

The area where the white wall (the one with the door to the garage) meets the brown tile looks odd to me. I suspect that there used to be a wall there?

The direction that the bar faces seems wrong. Should a kitchen bar area face an entryway?

Tile/appliances have to go. I'm 50/50 on the cabinets.

This is such a spectacular home, I think it would be worth your while to bring in an architect to help re-design the kitchen.

Please keep us updated!

Looking at the last drawing you posted, I have a better idea of the space.

I like the idea of moving the kitchen against the garage wall.

You could move it all the way over to the right hand side of the wall (where the door currently is) to take advantage of the view.

Then move the garage door to the left hand side. A portion of that area on the left could then be used a some sort of pantry/laundry/mud room that the garage would open into.

This area could be separated from the kitchen by some type of divider/wall.

colors finishes config etc. in the 'proposed' photos I think would be appropriate, good choice. Light enough to keep it from looking so dark but not so light as to show every little bit of dirt etc.

been a while since I updated this thread. Got the final design worked out and appliances chosen etc. Demo started while I was out of the country over new years.

Some renderings:

no turning back now!

The cabinets will be Wenge wood, white quartz caesarstone countertops, and polished concrete floors. I am still undecided on the backsplash but am leaning towards horizontal subway glass of some kind. Colors undecided.

Appliances are all going to be Jennair Euro Stainless.

despite what ever style you're shooting for, you should consider scale and how you will use your kitchen. from the images, it seems a little small. When finished, will you have adequate cabinet and counter space?

Today I asked the contractor to add plumbing for a potfiller to break up the backsplash area behind the grilltop a little bit.

Style of the fixtures I've been looking at is masculine clean and modern.
Its amazing how expensive fixtures/sinks etc are. I'm in the wrong business!

For sink I'm thinking a simple dual basin:

I need to find a modern clean potfiller I like. I'm leaning towards wall mounted.

I like this one:

http://www.expressdecor.com/product_inf ... ts_id/1293

Big enough to wash the dog in. (or soak a large pan) One of my kitchen sink criteria is being able to place a cookie sheet or similar sized pan down in the bottom of the sink to soak. The only way to get that in a double bowl is to get one with unequal bowls. With a dishwasher, one no longer needs a double bowl sink. I also like the bottom of a sink fairly flat.

I like the pull out faucet. I can no longer live without one.

I'm not sure if the pot filler is worth the money. You do, after all, have to pick up the pot of spaghetti to drain it anyway.
