Washington Mutual

Postby JGropp » Sat Sep 20, 2008 11:06 am

As a long-time residential architect, I really hate to see
the depths to which Seattle’s Washington Mutual has fallen.

When it was of reasonable size, I could send my custom
home design clients over to the local branch where the
manager would approve them on the spot for an affordable
mortgage that became part of that WM branch’s portfolio
(WM advertised that its mortgage loans were never sold).

It was a Mid-Century Modern bank for the so-called “MCMâ€￾
homes that were being custom built for individual clients.
Hopefully WM can be revived.

This is a joke of a bank! They try to stick you for every penny they can, we refer to it as WHAM-YOU, (WA MU); they hold your money till the very last second in a pathetically desperate attempt to get as much interest as possible. These MONSTER banks keep buying up small local banks; quality control and customer service get sent on a one-way-ride to the deepest reaches oblivion.
Why is it that everyone has the Wal-Mart attitude when it comes to making money, "F--- everyone, I want my money!" But the second something like this economic tragedy that seems to have enveloped the world happens, it's "Geee-golly-gosh, it wasn't supposed to happen like this...". "You mean an interest only loan wasn't a smart thing to do?!?!?!" No one will take responsibility for their own actions, it's so much easier to take the easy way out: chapter-13!
How long will this lesson last in everyone's memory: not long I will bet...

On the other hand...As more banks fail and get gobbled up by even bigger ones, that just means less competition, and thus fewer services and more fees. I suppose it won't be long before we actually look back fondly on today's level of service. (Shudder)

With banks (I prefer a Credit Union) they seem to nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING, altho WaMu was one of the last holdouts. In So Cal, they bought out Home Savings, in a way ya gotta give em credit tho for keeping the structures mostly intact with the Millard Sheets murals, which for the most part are still there. And that Brasilia looking branch in Palm Springs.

the impending downfall of Washington Mutual-

Postby JGropp » Mon Sep 22, 2008 11:31 am

I've posted this ad before but I'm re-posting it now
because I think this "flipping" kind of thing contributed
greatly to the impending downfall of Washington Mutual.

Wow, Home Savings! Those are some really swell looking banks; the murals in them always looked as if they were some kind of hybrid between Italian Renaissance and late 60's Hippie.
We have a new Dutch-invader on the central coast with the unfortunate name of Rabobank, pronounced, rob o' bank, what desperate people in Ireland do when they need money, we call it Robot Bank!
When I was little, back in the early 1970's, we had a bank called Bell Savings, I think it was built on the site of an old Shell station, now it's a US Bank.
I can still hear the old California Savings and Loan adverts from way back when: "Coooooome, to Californiaaaaaa Saaaaavings and Loan..." That and "Is your engine sick and tired, want your car to run like new, Automotive Engineering..."
We have a credit union opening up in town very soon, I can't wait; money that stay in a community: there's a novel concept!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to be with Washington Mutual, but their nickel-and-dime ways and exceptionally poor service were bad enough to get even me - the champion procrastinator - to go out of my way to switch banks even thought it was a royal pain in the arse to do so. That was in about 1998. Went to another bank and have had exceptional service ever since, so not all banks are created equal.

Call me crazy but i've been with US Bank for about 15 years and aside from a few bumps along the way have always thought it was a fine bank. There is hardly ever a wait on their phone service and their online banking is EASY. As far as i know not too much nickel and diming.

I agree with the previous two posts.
We've been with both WM and USB
for many years with "pretty good"
service. The problem with our being
Mid-Century Moderns ourselves is that
we do remember better things once
common. (This dates me I know). J-

Well, you know, you can find anecdotal evidence of just about anything.

I once opened a free WAMU account for a specific purpose, and when that purpose ended, there was still 41 cents in the account. They kept sending me statements, so I called them and told them it was okay to close the account. They said I would have to do it in person, which I wasn’t inclined to do. A year later, they were still sending me statements, so I called them again, and they said I had to close the account in person. A year later, I decided to use that account to test something in PayPal. The account now has a $1.70 in it … but that’s starting to look pretty good! (And since the account is active again, I was able to change it online to not send statements.)

Now the old Crocker Bank - there was a bank!

We were with WM until they decided to withdraw two mortgage payments from our checking at one time. then had to fight them to wave bounce check fees because of there actions. When we finally got away, they bought up our new mortgage from our lender like the whores they are.

Howard Ahmanson, founder of Home Savings which was absorbed by Washington Mutual, had a great scheme to incorporate art into his banks. Most of the work was done by folks from the Claremont, CA area related to Millard Sheets. If you like his work, just look up his collaborators like Albert Stewart, Betty Davenport Ford and Dennis O'Connor. It's great stuff.

WAMU

Postby vlopez » Wed Oct 01, 2008 9:53 pm

Joe,
It's strange that the reason you left WAMU was because they took out two house payments in one month because that's EXACTLY what happened to me last week. They still insist I authorized the second withdrawal so are refusing to cover NSF fees, etc.

The strange thing is that my home loan is also through WAMU and they couldn't transfer the extra payment back to my checking account! I'd have to go to a branch and get them to FAX something to home loans dept.....blah, blah, blah.

I kept saying "but you're WAMU sending WAMU my money back to my WAMU checking!". They said it's not that simple.....

It is to me!

my parents stayed with the particular wamu branch because of the bank manager had been with the same branch for 18 years, and had seen it through three change of ownerships.

it works well for them because they built a relationship with her. They still go to the bank to do most of their banking, where my hub and I never go into a bank, if we can help it.

That makes all the difference.
