Just tried out a new digital camera to see how it holds up in the dark:

I've seen a quite a few night time shots on lotta livin'. Maybe everyone can pitch in w/ a link to their latest night time house photos.

Best thing I ever did was get a camera that could take good night shots. Haven't tried anything at home yet (not a bad idea!) but it's been fun playing with it around town.

I use a Canon EOS 20D for my night shots. With a tripod and a remote shutter release (pretty much any SLR should be capable of that, and probably some of the better point & shoot cameras as well), you can get very stable long-term exposures. This one, for example, was a 60-second exposure on a nearly pitch-black night (not the best, but one of the longer exposures I could find):

(The nice part of such a long exposure is that you can't tell several people walked right in front of the camera while I was taking the photo.)

I'm far from a pro and haven't figured out all of the aperture/shutter speed configurations, though I'm slowly trying. Usually I just use the "bulb" setting and vary the length of the exposure until trial-and-error gives me a few to choose from. Snap enough photos, and a few of them are bound to turn out pretty nicely (definitely an advantage of digital over film in that regard).

I use my SD1000 more than I use my SLR camera for exactly the same reason: the dang thing's just too big to lug around. I can take the "baby" camera pretty much anywhere.

This is a good primer that I initially used. Tweaking in Photoshop also helps.

In my old life as a cop and crime scene tech, (really, not joking), we would take several shots of the same frame stepping the ap up and down and increasing and decreasing the exposure time. Of course back then it was all film so you didn't know what you had until it was developed. Nowdays if you have a manual digital you can get an idea right then. I think trial and error is the only way.

Here is one I took of my place at night. I received a tripod for Christmas though, so I need to test it out by taking some new photos.
