Just finished blowing leaves and acorns off my roof...it was hard enough climbing the ladder with a blower on my back let alone worrying about a camera so sorry, no pics.

The husband just replaced a belt on the mower, so I can at least get in the first mowing of the season. Other than that, very little has been done!

good timing on the question... this month's been spent outdoors (as in a few months, the heat will be too torturous).

finished:
// fencing... lots of new fencing. and gates. the wide car-gate will be nice when the paves come in on a forklift.
// low retaining wall defining the "side garden" area -- made of redwood 4X4s (3 high)
// higher "sitting" wall on the far edge on the above where it meets a hardscape patio -- made of pressure treated 6X6s (3 high)... soon to be clad (on the face) with eichler siding and topped with a redwood bench-top
// installation of 4-zone irrigation system: front lawn, back lawn, fence-shrubbery, and veggie-garden...
// laying of (long) decomposed granite pathway adjacent to the low wall -- 2 cubic-yards so far and i think i'll need at least 1 more...
// planting of natives in the shrub-area: manzanitas (bush and groundcover), ceanothus, juniper and myrtle... my wife says: "it looks like a forest", so i s'pose that's good.
// installation of landscape lighting (back area)... so far, the $200 malibu 6-bollard, 2-spot kit is doing ok. the 40 year old (50 foot) pepper tree looks cool when up-lit.

in progress:
// defining the front lawn with edging and planting areas. two down, three to go
// laying of front stepping stones along with another light kit
// planting in the front and back
// "sod" in the front/back "lawns"... not sure if we're going plain-ol-grass or a native groundcover. sadly, the even, manicured look of traditional turf would be nice... the areas are only about 200sf each, but set up for easy irrigation... all other areas will be drip irrigation and very low-water natives.
// installation of the garage-side pavers... a fairly big job.

pictures soon... a few already up on the blog, but here's the illustrator (sorry, i'm a graphic designer) layout...

NY went from scarf and jacket to tube-top in 24hours.
Putting in a drip irrigation system before ground covers fill in.

-Went to Hdopo and bought a sexy clump of hose washers.
-Admired their glassy concrete floors.
-Screwed together a dozen bulb splitters but the quality was less than China.
(thought it might look cool above my washer/dryer)
-They still have a decent house # design
-New cabinet hardware display. Really nice one but special order.
(a good thing since i may have bought a couple with no place to put it)
-Exterior solar lights are still ugly after twenty years and i bet still only light up a path for Barbie.
-Forgot to wear my t-shirt that says, 'i don't work here'
-Forgot to look for drip irrigation parts...
So now i am here. http://www.dripworksusa.com/

working on our combo japanese/herb garden pictured above. it is a work in progress. i'd like to add some more herbs like basil or perhaps cilantro. i very recently fabricated and installed the bench above. it hopefully will define the edge of the patio better (and keep people from falling into the pond).

Image
this is the raised vegetable bed i built. first year trying to grow vegetables. the chicken wire is unsightly, but necessary to keep cat from digging...

Image
this montage shows the overall look we are going for; clean lines of separation that utilize both right angles and curves. the wood edging is cedar. i'm trying to create a "park-like" landscape with defined areas of interest/focal points.

So I lied. Saturday was too nice to stay inside. Worked on refinishing some patio furniture then went out and bought a lawnmower and a hedge trimmer. Shaped shrubs in front of house. Not bad for my first attempt.

Got poison ivy.

I have been trying to do some exterior painting, but being split between two different states (missouri during the week and oklahoma during the weekend) it is slow going. It also doesn't help that it is sunny and in the low 70's during the week and rainy and dreary on the weekend for about 4 weeks straight.

This weekend looks promising so I will be hitting it hard outside.

Really interested in AJ's cedar edging or other ideas

Postby happy modernists in MN » Tue Apr 24, 2012 12:11 pm

Hi sorry for reviving an old thread but I'm really interested in learning more about AJ's cedar wood edging especially how it curves. I tried to search for interesting edging types on the message board, but didn't find much. I really hate everything I'm seeing at the big boxes. I am not a fan of anything plastic being put in the ground. I have a lot of places in my yard that I need to put edging like next my driveway, around garden beds and pathways. I like the linear look AJ got with the cedar. Anyone have any other ideas?? I have a 1958 tuckunder ranch grandma-styley that has maroon 18" grooved cedar shakes and also a natural cedar fence. I should add that I have a million medium-size rocks about 6 inches in diameter that could be used for a edging project, but I really haven't come up with a good way to make that work, especially when it come to weeding.
Thanks in advance, please start this as a new thread if appropriate.
