These might work for you - they originally came out of a fake vent hood I had in the kitchen of my house (built in 1964 so not too far off from your house) - I have 3. They're made of copper-coated aluminum with glass inserts. I didn't keep the fixture, but it was your typical el cheapo fixture with two small flat extensions for the screws to mount to. Light is about 4.5" tall and 6" in diameter with piercings. I haven't tried to clean them but would imagine they would clean off with little effort, or you can clean off all the copper to make them aluminum-colored. Sure it might take a little effort to get them working but I'll leave it to you if you want them. Let me know if you're interested and I'll ship them off to you.

Digging up an older thread... I have a similar issue with my hallway lighting, though my ceilings are even lower (7' - good thing I'm short :P), and there is an air conditioning duct running down the center (we were wondering why the recessed cans were off to one side :?).

Originally I wanted to move the existing 4" cans to the center, but no can do (contractor says there's maybe 4" of space, tops).

I thought about sconces, but of course it's a narrow hallway, too (though I do love Rejuvenation's 'Otis' fixture that scowsa posted - those will be going on the patio if we can afford it).

The only other option I can see, besides leaving the recessed lights off to the side, would be to install a very shallow flush mount fixture. These are smallest I've found (in terms of depth) so far:

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Finally getting back to doing these... there is a closet in the hall - and a bedroom door that opens out to the hallway (though that could be changed). I'm leaning towards keeping the recessed cans to one side and putting art up so it looks like it's on purpose. ;) Thanks for the tips, and many thanks to SDR as well.

I did find a few more low profile ceiling lights, in case anyone else is looking for.
