Mercer Island really needs to
underground its wires. (Do see
some of my other posts to this
by now rather lengthy thread).

I don't mind the first example. Roof pitches are consistent, the moldings and trims are weighty enough, and there don't seem to be out-of-place
decorative elements (other than the A & C garage brow trellis, which I applaud nevertheless). And only one paint color ! We should cheer. . .?

I'm sorry to hear it.

While my own preference might be for only "modern" houses to be built, anywhere, now and in the future -- after all, it is the only really honest way to
build, and always was, at any time in history -- there are actually some very presentable example of "the styles" being produced, at last, in
some quarters. I've seen quite convincing Craftsman bungalows and Shingle Style houses in some places. It's probably not builder stuff, but
rather architect-designed custom work -- but whatever it costs, it's refreshing to see, after so many decades of crap.

I assume there are still people in New England, for instance, who know how to design a "genuine" Cape Cod saltbox, if asked -- even given the
necessities of double glazing and R40 roofs (or whatever). And it's hard to argue that some of these pieces don't look right at home, in the right
landscape.

After all, we don't want to be accused of "style-ism" (i.e., prejudice), do we. . .!

:D

Tell me, Jerry, as an architect of notable exception...are your colleagues in your profession plain slap out of original ideas concerning residential design, or what?? The only difference I see between the McMansion schlep you post for your region and that of my friend Eric Green on his cosmicool.com "architectural wonders" site (photographed in my region) is choice of exterior cladding and a few other minor variations. The overarching theme for both regions is that the darn thing has to be BIG, and the roof line absolutely must without exception be as pointy and complex as possible!

I'm sure Jerry will have a response, but in the mean time -- why should we expect regional variation ( of the elements you focus on, anyway) when the
national media -- shelter magazines, TV shows -- broadcast these ideas universally across the land ?

DFWmidmodfan-Thanks for
the kind words. I guess I am an
exception in that I started out

projects. I soon decided I liked
working (by myself) on homes-

National media has nothing to do with it. It's the nationalization of homebuilders. Conglomerates like KB Home, Pulte, D.R. Horton, and Lennar are homogenizing the architecture of our housing stock at rates you wouldn't believe. Each of these builders has gobbled up smaller local builders, resulting in less competition and less creativity in design. For example, here California, we lost Lewis Homes to KB; Rielly Homes, Schuler Homes, and Western Pacific Housing to Horton; and Marlborough Development, Bramalea Homes, and Coleman Homes to Lennar. Nine separate builders down to three. And that's just a quick local snapshot; there is more contraction in the industry yet to happen (e.g., the giant Pulte-Centex merger).

All of these large builders use in-house draftsmen to design the majority (though not necessarily all) of their developments. Many plans don't even pass through an architect except when necessary to meet building code requirements that the plans be certified by one.

The regional, local, and custom builders follow the lead of the national builders, because the national builders are doing all the market research to find out what sells. Unfortunately, what sells fastest requires pandering to the most "average" buyer, and unfortunately, modern design is not--and has never been--"average."

DFWmidmodfan-
As to:
"are your colleagues in

original ideas concerning residential
design, or what??" original ideas
per se or lack of same, are not the
problem, it's the complete lack of
good ideas, well applied. Jerry
