The idea of "LottaLiving" started
in California. I'm sorry this great
State is in so much trouble these
days. Hopefully it will come back.

Yep- we're just watching the crumbling here in CA this week. So many folks are waiting to see if their government jobs will last or if they'll have to layoff their employees. And Slim and I are going to be heartbroken if our favorite state park gets closed.

Hopefully, this doesn't mean too many more of us will come and clutter up your part of the world! So much for California centric thinking on LL ( and we are both natives).

Heading to Seattle and Portland first week in August for business and looking forward to a breath of fresh air.

might go beyond the scope of this board

But this may be a dilemma for any state or freely elected democratic civil government.

The electorate and the elected are not being honest about the connection between the taxes that are paid and the government services received, the electorate is somewhat clueless and disinterested and the elected would rather not engage the elected in that issue. Sadly they would rather listen to pundits about this who don't necessarily care nor have the knowledge to bring this issue to an honest intelligent discussion in the public sphere, they just say stuff that can get them more notoriety (bottom line they are in it for the money). I noticed it started happening when 1. Reagan became governor (then president) and 2. Prop. 13 passed.

Will California be able to bounce back? Or is it the "tragedy of the commons" on a massive scale? As somone once said, "California is to the U.S. what the U.S. is to the world" and I do agree. I hope the Golden State can shine again.

I don't live there, but I love California. What ails the Golden State is serious, but nothing that is insurmountable. Time, compromise, and some common sense sans emotion will get things going again.

California's epitath has been written many times and subsequently forgotten a year or so later. We will all be chuckling about this in a year or so. 8-)

big assignment-

Postby JGropp » Thu Jul 23, 2009 1:53 pm

As to MM's: "keep it focused on
how economics relates to preservation
of historic architecture please"- that's
a pretty big assignment these days.

Preservation of architects is rather
necessary too. Jerry-

Jerry, going back to your book question of The Omnivore's Dilemma: CA is being developed at such a rate that the delicate ecosystems aren't keeping up. Gabby and I don't celebrate Earth Day: everyday is Earth Day at our house - LITERALLY!
Hopefully people will stop and take notice of the mistakes they made that caused this debacle.
Gabby and I feel fortunate that we live here; it's a state, or place, like no other, yet it's like everywhere in the world. An example: when I finally got to see The Smokey Mountains, I was a bit disappointed: I had already seen The Santa Cruz Mountains! Yes I know It's not the same thing, but it was so close to me!

That photo is spectacular, Slim.

Did you do any touching up to get those layered colors so distinct?

Sorry, that's not my work, but it really does look like that at times! Gabby used to see this view every day on her commute home before we moved.
